My goofball Mitch was playing in his rice box, digging and warring at himself. He was getting into it so hard, and he had his mouth wide open when he blasted himself with rice... Then he was gagging and trying to spit, pawing at his mouth. I stuck my finger in his mouth and helped him clear his mouth, and he stopped gagging. I'm not sure if he spit everything out or swallowed some. Should I be worried about blockage at all? Can ingesting uncooked rice cause problems? He seems fine now, but should I start on the blockage protocol?

As long as it is not converted (quick cook rice) there is minimal chance of blockage.

Thanks, msav. No, I use regular white rice. So it would just pass IF he ingested a few grains? I'm not positive if he did, but he always plays so hard that I wonder about this all the time. He is so silly. Why dig with his mouth open?  |

I Never had a problem with mine. They snorkel under the rice all the time. I put 50 lbs of jasmine rice in their dig box.
if you question your rice. put some in a bowl of water. if it is still firm after a few hours you should be fine

That science experiment actually sounds really fun! I will try it and see what happens. I got a 50 lb. bag from Sam's club too! My box is not big enough to accommodate all of it, so I used about half the bag. It turns out, Mitch likes to play in it, AND occasionally uses it as a bathroom (it's happened twice already!), so it's a good thing that I have extra rice. I scoop the poop and get all the wet part, and pour a little more rice in. I think my Mitch is... well, he is a sweetheart.  |

I'm amazed my guys (touch wood) haven't tried to eat it yet, or go to the toilet in there. I bought a 10kg (about 22lb) bag but I was worried it might be the wrong sort so I did the water test. My rice didn't swell but it did sort of become brittle, but I did leave it overnight.
So far only Mako plays in there really, Bolin seems to prefer the ping pong balls. Korra doesn't 'do' either.

I realized that I never posted my science project results. I put a spoon full of rice in a glass of water over night, but it didn't change the appearance. It just got whiter a little bit, but that's it. Mitch has been pooping fine since then, so I think he'll live. :thumbsup: Thanks for the good advice!
