So would it be appropriate for me to name an animal 'Wetback' if they liked water? A slur is a slur, and Romani people have always considered 'gypsy' a slur. The only thing that's different now is that it's easier to reach people and speak up about it through social media. I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in one of the links I posted that 'gypsy' being used to refer to a wanderer comes from Romani people being persecuted throughout Europe so they were never able to settle for very long.

I see no problem with it. But I am not sensitive to words. I only take offense to them being directed at someone.
Words are just words only people give those words the power to effect us.
While I am sympathetic to the difficulties that people have went though in the past. I don't believe in giving much power to a word.
That is just me I am a no drama person and don't let things like that bother me.
I feel if they are not directed at a person then they should hold no derogatory intent.

"Wetback" was never used as anything except a slur as far as I've ever heard. I feel "gypsy" is only a slur when used in that specific context, like the word "black" or "white". Growing up, I never knew "gypsy" could even have negative connotations, I thought it was more like associating somebody with having mystical qualities.
On topic: The ferrets are both cute.

Actually, the word 'gypsy' was created specifically to refer to Romani people (based on the incorrect assumption that they came from Egypt). It was created as a label for them by people outside of their culture and came to be recognized as a slur. And for many Romani people it is exactly the same as casually using other ethnic slurs that are more well known in the US. One of the sources I had posted explained both of those but I'll put it here again, in case you want to read. gypsyappropriations.blogspot.com/2010/04/problem-with-word-gypsy.html

Where I'm from, the word gypsy refers to European immigrants who scam people, cheat the system, or steal. Since ferrets are referred to as thieves, maybe that was the logic behind the name. Just my two cents.

Change her name to Tipsy. I think a ferret named Tipsy would be awesome It's that or Poughkeepsie.

Update on these two. They have become quite chubby. They love Socks and shoes. They love stashing toys, derby eggs and did I mention socks. Gypsy is still quite shy, she will occasionally engage in play with me. Taz and Bleu still just want to kill them, but Cassia and Mogwai can co-exist with some semi rough play Here is a current picture of Gypsy, I will try and get an update picture of Al in the next couple of days. He looks about the same weight as Gypsy. They tip the scales at 2lb 5oz.

They look healthy and happy. I'm so glad they are settling in so nicely. Sounds like Taz and Bleu want them to know this is their home. Those two are such fierce little warriors. Don't you love having different play groups?
