Hey everyone, I'm going to try to make soapie today. I have everything now except the chicken heart. If I omit that this first time will it affect anything? I know the recipe is formulated to be nutritiously balanced, but I really want to see if Alvin will eat it this weekend. The natural store here has everything except the hearts are special order. Also, should I start by weighing how much he eats now? I'm trying to get some nutrition in him right away as he has been eating chicken baby food exclusively for 4 days now. Thank you very much! I'll post and update with pictures later!

Heart provides taurine (very important), if you can't get the heart you would need to add taurine to the soup, although I am not sure what amount is needed. One of the more experienced members can likely provide that for you.

Hi. While heart is an absolute necessity for a balanced diet, It won't hurt to make one batch of soup without it just to get him started. If you can't get the hearts soon, though, you'll need to get a taurine supplement and add 500 mg per day.

Thank you very much! Yes, the heart would be added for the next batch, but it is good to know that it is so important!

There are other meat-sources of taurine as well (tongue, and I believe eyeballs) although I have a feeling if you can't find hearts the other two definitely won't be available.
Good luck with your journey to raw! I highly recommend starting an unofficial switching thread while waiting for a mentor. Even if you aren't paired one-to-one, mentors will always pop in and give advice. It will also help you record your progress so you can read back through it if you need to.

For some of us, finding hearts can be difficult. You have some on order and that's great. I hope Alvin takes to the soup easily, but don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries. Ferrets are notoriously picky, they simply don't recognize new foods as foods. Try sitting with him on your lap, dab some on his mouth and he will have to lick it off. If he tries to run away, pick him back up and put him on your lap. Place one hand under him and offer him some soup from a small spoon. Taurine is really important for ferrets. Take a moment and read a little about it: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/15089/information-taurine

Give your local grocery stores a try, depending on where you live you may find chicken/beef hearts are more common than you think. I can generally find hearts at 3 different large grocery chain stores in my area.

By the way...mice are very high in taurine too, more than chicken hearts if I remember. Though I'm not sure how many of you are into throwing some of those in your blender ciao
