Yeah, you are right - if I put that in balance, the decision is pretty clear. I stopped giving him the meds. It's just...disappointing, because the medicine was not on a prescription, but it was given to me directly from the hospital, by a specialist. It may be so that she didn't know or see - but that's not an excuse to prescribe poison... The amount that it contains could damage or even kill a dog.. His poor little body In anycase, I'll try to go to a different pharmacy and see if I can't get the plain one, though I have doubts - since the place I went today told me clearly it's only on prescription. Worth trying though. Good job on catching that. My husband is a heart patient and has other medical issues. He's so smart and does all his research. It's amazing how many times, he has caught mistakes because he does pay attention and checks everything. Our little guys can't do that. I'm so glad that you are such a careful ferrent. (dance)

Do you know if they ever mix prazosin with xylitol? I know the pharmacist mixes it with a sweetner, but I can't tell what it is.

@boojum01 Is it in liquid form? Because I tried to research it, and I could only find the capsules, in which I think there are no sweeteners.
I'm sorry, I don't know much about it - I've never used it. But maybe someone else around here has.
I found out about the sweetener because they gave me the kids' liquid version of the antibiotic, and it was written on the bottle that it was sweetened with xylitol. If it's liquid, I think they might - it's probably a matter of choice what sweetener they use (might be sugar as well), since they want the little patients to like the taste....
I would ask the pharmacist or vet before giving it to the ferret, just to be on the safe side.

It is liquid. It was mixed to taste at the pharmacists. They asked me about sweetener, I said yes, but I am not sure if I mentioned that artificial sweeteners are toxic to ferrets. I know that if they fill prescriptions for pets they should know that. But I just don't remember. I've tasted it, but it may or may not be. In any case the pharmacy is closed tomorrow. I've asked my vet and am waiting for an answer. He's got worsening blood in his urine, so there it is. I ABSOLUTELY hate being helpless like this.

Is there any emergency where you can go? For the blood in urine - because it sound VERY serious. I gave my boy the antibiotic with xylitol for a few days and he was ok. I changed it after that. But he's a young healthy boy..however, if it is another sweetner or sugar, it'll affect an insulinomic ferret more. If he isn't insulinomic, I think the sweetner would have an effect only on long term use (just like any carb food or sugar), so I think that the benefits in his case outweigh risk

I stopped the pred, missed two doses so far, and visible blood is decreasing.

i read that xylitol is worse than sugar on its affects on insulin and after the spike it causes hypoglycemia which lasts for hours in dogs.
