I just gave Aramis his antibiotic for the enteritis, and I was wondering why he liked it (he'd normally try to kill me when I give meds) - I read the label and it says it has xylitol (which I know it's poisonous to ferrets!) and minimal dose of ethanol, and strawberry flavour. Is that normal for all meds? Has anyone experienced this? I messaged my vet too, but it's almost 3 am here....

Hm, fruit flavoring they do by adding lots of sugar, so that isn't good. I asked the pharmacist, and that's what she told me, that the fruit flavors were pretty much flooding it with sugar to make it taste better. I asked about the Prednisolone I was giving my girl with Insu, and she said that could help it along/progress and could almost defeat the purpose of using it depending on the amount.
I'd get unflavored, some Vets actually recommend feeding carbs to insulinomic ferrets (headwall) so I would stay away from any flavoring, you can just request it without it.

Ugh, that is terrible! On this it says it's sweetened with xylitol... I assume it can have the same side effect, plus it's toxic? I don't know what amounts though.. It's just that I can't stop an antibiotic treatment in the middle of it and start again after 2-3 days, because it will make the bacterial infection worse and resistant... i don't even know what to do for the weekend, as antibiotics are only given with prescription...

Her Pred was long term (forever), I wouldn't say for a couple days it would do much harm, is he Insulinomic? I know that's what my pharmacist said, and that xylitol is toxic so it isn't looking good, but I wouldn't stop giving the meds. What is the name of the antibiotic?
The senior members can offer better advice, I'm going by what I was told when I asked because my girl hated the flavor of her meds. But her condition was seizing at least once a week at the time, and any sugar was just too dangerous for her.

I would get a new, unflavored bottled for sure, but for a few days he should be okay, imo.

Ok....I know where you guys are coming from. As far as the pred. I'm guessing you're talking about pediapred....don't get your knickers in a knot . This is the content of pediapred Each 5 mL of dye-free, colourless to light straw-coloured, raspberry-flavoured solution contains prednisolone base 5 mg (as prednisolone sodium phosphate USP). Nonmedicinal ingredients: disodium edetate, raspberry flavour, methylparaben, purified water, sodium phosphate, and sorbitol. This is fine it works very well. One thing some people have discovered that the unflavoured doesn't work near as well as the pediapred. This is has been created to be easily absorbed by children, the adult version doesn't work as well on ferrets Now for the other med, Ditrim...I pulled the vet solution for this and doesn't have any flavours. The human version doesn't seem to have a listing of the extra components. It does mention that diabetics should be careful and to work with their doctors to stabilize their BG, so there is a sweetener used. I would call your vet in the morning and make enquiries as to the problems that you perceive with the added components. The drug formula may need to be changed. Having problems with drugs when you use them for human use isn't uncommon. Perhaps your vet didn't know that was the sweetener use in the drug. ciao

I use Pediapred, but I called about adding a flavor, and the pharmacist told me to add a flavor AFTER the Pred was already mixed and such (a fruit flavor) that they would use sugar to do that, a lot of sugar. So going by what she told me, I figured any med with a fruit flavor they would do the same. Your vet very well may not have known it was flavored, surely you could get it unflavored though. I mix the meds with food, and they don't get too upset over that. My boy actually takes his Pred better than Carafate (which is pink and is like pepto for them, doesn't taste that bad... yes I've tasted it, lol)

Get in touch with your vet ASAP when they open. :/

I don't know if I read the label right - it says 475mg/ml. What the?! And I gave it to him for 3 days:(( i couldn't get hold of the vet, but I consider stopping the treatment altogether. I hope it didn't do any damage, as he took 1,4ml/day. Do you have any experience with stopping the treatment in the middle - did it aggravate? Especially bacteria... i have one of the active substances in pure form as pills, but I'd have to cut it in ab 10 pieces to match the dosage...

Xylitol is toxic. What good is it to give antibiotics if other ingredients are poison? Infection vs. kidney failure??? Call your vet. Try to get it re-formulated/mixed. I hate when these things come up on weekends when the vets arent around...

Yeah, you are right - if I put that in balance, the decision is pretty clear. I stopped giving him the meds. It's just...disappointing, because the medicine was not on a prescription, but it was given to me directly from the hospital, by a specialist. It may be so that she didn't know or see - but that's not an excuse to prescribe poison... The amount that it contains could damage or even kill a dog.. His poor little body In anycase, I'll try to go to a different pharmacy and see if I can't get the plain one, though I have doubts - since the place I went today told me clearly it's only on prescription. Worth trying though.
