As some of you may have read, I am no longer a homeowner. I have relocated to Oregon and am renting a house. This has lead to some better, non-permanent Ferret proofing. Also I have to protect the flooring in order to be able to keep my deposit and give ferrets a better name in the house renting community. One of the extra rooms is the ferret room. I covered the carpet with a sheet of linoleum and folded the edge up the wall. In the hallway I have put some cut up office chair mat in all the door thresholds that the ferrets are interested in. As I learned in my house it only takes a few minutes for a ferret with sharp claws to tear up the carpet in a corner. The front door is a favorite for ferrets to poop against. must be all the new smells outside. I got a super absorbent runner for the front door. The ferrets also love playing king of the rug while wrestling on it. I will add some more in the next few days.

The front door pooping is a territorial thing. They do it to let anyone know who comes in that it is their space. Pooping in front of baby gates is also common.

Great ideas for ferret proofing. We have lot's of holes in the edges of carpet also. I like the idea of the plastic. We also get front door ferret poops. You've given me some helpful suggestions. Thanks. :wave2:

Your floorplan looks very similar to mine and the front entry is almost identical. I, too, have trouble with poop by the front door. I love the plastic chair mat doorway protectors! How did you get the template for your cuts around the molding so perfect?

How did you get the template for your cuts around the molding so perfect? Measuring tape and lots of test fitting. Once I did one. I just used it as a template for the others as they were the same dimensions just the width doorway spacing was different. They have not pooped on that mat yet. They love it too much. They scratch at it roll around on it and wrestle on it. Even My little territorial sprite has not pooped on it.

I never thought of clear office mat for under the doors! That's a great idea. I wish I had thought of that before our carpet was completely dug and destroyed! Since we have carpet right inside the front door, I put down some square linoleum tiles. That way territory marking poo is not directly made on the carpet.
Great looking play-set too!

I can see you've applied all your hard-earned knowledge to the new place! Very smart, and hopefully it's gratifying to put all that experience to use (i.e. all that past aggravation has finally come in handy) I love your play trees -- aren't you worried that your ferrets will fall off? Or decide to jump in an ill-advised direction? I would love to have a set-up like that.

I actually bought those cat trees when I had Climbing ferrets. None of ferrets climb, I used to line the bottom of the cat trees with loads of blankets to cushion any potential falls.
The do go in the little huts when The have a mouse or some other prized food to stash and eat.
They did climb onto the window sill after I put it there. so I put the blankets under the sill.
They like looking out the window during the day.

I've thought of doing that, but I'm worried that having safe place to climb and fall will make her reckless everywhere! I might be overthinking this. She's not a climber and has been a very cautious jumper so far (although I've seen her eyeing the chest of drawers from my bed...).

My 6 year old female backs off of anything that is high up that she is on and slowly lowers herself down. It is so funny. She is so overly cautious. Now if you give her a stuffed animal she will launch herself off of anything and then land on the stuffed animal she is holding. It is so funny. silly sprite

Always wondered why they poop in front of doors. msav, I put office mats in front of all the doors and stuck them with duck tape. My mom said it looked tacky. How did you get yours to stick? Your ferret proofing looks very nice. I wish you could come and ferret proof my hallway.

My office chair mats are rigid. They are not very flexible but just flexible enough to put in place after cutting out the door threshold.
since they are captive in the door threshold they do not move. no tape or glue needed. Just have to custom cut them to fit. This protects both sides of the door in one piece

I'll try that, thanks. Mine are from Home Depot. Last time, I didn't cut them like yours so I'll do that. Thank you.

thelifeofmyferrets There are also two types of office chair protectors. One meant for carpets with spikes on the bottom side and one meant for hardwood that is smooth on both sides. If you use the one for carpets and cut it to fit the door frame, I doubt it would be easy to move.

I read somewhere on here that ferrets gravitate to duct tape which explains why they always pull it off. Thank you
