I know a lot of ferrents with travel use puppy pads to line the corners of their crate. However, this can get messy with accidents and with the need to change the pads once they're soiled. If someone else has an efficient method of doing this, please let me know, but I thought with the holidays coming up I should share this learned tip for quick DIY litter trays.
First, you're going to need an aluminum casserole dish. Something like this
should only run you back a dollar or two. Make sure that the corners fit within the corners of your crate/carrier!
Are you seeing where I'm going with this?
Cut your lasagna pan into four parts as shown. This will become four pans. You don't necessarily have to use them all at once; I usually dispose of them after using them for one round-trip, but this isn't necessary either.
Snip three cuts in one of your fourths as shown, creating two little flaps. Carefully fold these under and make them flush by using a ruler or something similar. Leave no sharp metal edges!! If you're worried about poo or litter spilling out of your tray, you can repeat the cuts and this time fold the flaps upward, leaving them horizontal. Ferrets will usually back straight up to these pans rather than putting their feet in them.
**IMPORTANT: Leave the edge of the pan's rim sticking out in little tabs if you have a metal bar crate!**
**If you do have metal bars, you can fold each metal tab over a bar to lock it in place.
Otherwise, secure your litter pan down with some double-sided tape or glue dots.
Now it's done! No more accidents can fall out the sides of your crate. Line this metal tray with paper towels, a little bit of your favorite litter, or anything else that suits your needs. It can also be used to line the corners of rooms that are being litter-trained in, since it's really inexpensive.
Happy travels!
