Hi,
I have two male ferrets still intact, Aramis is almost 8 months old and Gizmo is 6 months old. Even so young, we had some problems with them. One is hybrid (ferret & polecat) and one is, as we found out a while after we got him, wild (polecat).
Aramis had a thing for anything made of rubber or foam, and he managed to swallow an earplug when he was a bit over 2 months old. He had surgery and healed fine. But a few months after, in October, he was acting strange, hiding and sleeping all the time and not eating. After picking him up, I noticed he was crying when I was touching his tummy. So we took him as an emergency to the vet - did an xray and there were no foreign bodies but he had a lot of gas and it was hard to see. the vet said it was probably gastritis and she gave us medicine. we gave him the treatment for about 10 days and he got better. however, I noticed that in the past 2, almost 3 months he hasn't gained any more weight, he's stuck at 1,45kg and he looks pretty skinny. He eats, but not very much, poops regularly, normally (maybe a bit smaller). also, he used to love raw meat and all of a sudden he refuses to eat it (we have to trick him to eat it in various mixes or soups). I wonder if these problems could be related and if he might have developed any other serious issues as a consequence. Aramis is still active and playful, but not as active as his buddy. However, his body is very lean and light, that everytime i pick him up I am afraid not to break him.
Gizmo on the other hand is big, muscular even though smaller in age than Aramis, he weighs about 1,8kg (not fat, rather solid, massive) and keeps growing. He is very energetic all the time. But I noticed that one of his testicles is enlarged, is very big compared to the other one. Both of them were scheduled to be neutered next month, but this worries me now, and I don't want it to be too late.
As the specialized vet that we always visited will only be back in December, so I am asking for advice on whether we should take them to a different hospital for a more urgent care.
We lost Ozzy, out albino ferret, in April, at the age of 4, because of insulinoma (as check up after check up the vets couldn't find anything, until we found this good doctor who told us right away what it was, but it was already too late), and needless to say, besides leaving a deep scar, I am now more paranoid than ever about them.
I'd appreciate any advice or opinion, thank you in advance!
