Botulism is a bacteria that grows in oxygenless (anaerobic) environments like the soil. In human cases it's usually from canned food. The bacteria (clostridium botulinum) itself isn't a particular problem, but the bacteria produce a chemical called botulism toxin that is extremely toxic. It causes flaccid paralysis (floppy, unable to move) and if it gets to the respiratory muscles it prevents you from being physically able to breathe. It is extremely rare, but in just the right setting it can and - clearly - does happen.

As Jason said the odds are very, very low. It's not something most ferrents should have on their list of daily concerns, that's for sure. Last update from Phae showed the 3 who pulled through starting to do MUCH better with walking - they are definitely making great progress. She has been doing all sorts of massage and water therapy and such with them which is making a huge difference in their recovery. They couldn't be in better hands.

So sorry for the loss, my heart would be so breaking. I am glad they figured out what it was. Prayers to the rest of her fur kids.
