My ferret is about 5.5-6 years old and she has adrenal disease for about a year and a half now. She got her second deslorin implant early this summer. She generally liked to scratch herself even before, but now now it has increased a little. Not that it is interfering with her everyday activities too much, but sometimes she stops playing to have a an itchy fit. And I was wondering if this would help to relieve her of this a bit. I have read on this forum before that people use primrose oil to help ferrets relieve itching on their skin. Though it was a while ago and I forgot everything. I was wondering what amounts it is safe to give them this oil? and how often? with food or separately? This is the ingredient list:

No idea about primrose oil. I use reishi mushrooms for this.

Quoted from "The Veterinary Formulary" pg 392 "In cats preliminary data indicates some efficacy in allergic skin disease at a doses of evening primrose oil 0.5 to 1.0 g daily and fish oil up to 107 mg daily. Side-effects are rare and may include transient diarrhoea and vomiting. These effects can be minimized and absorption of the oils increased if they are given with food. Evening primrose may lower the seizure threshold and should be used with caution in epileptics." I know this is for cats but most of what is written about cats can often be applied to ferrets. The only consistent warning I could find was that it could cause seizures. ciao

If you do experience problems with the primrose (and I hope you don't) you might want to try salmon oil. That's what I use for Loki.

It has been suggested in that article to not use just the primrose oil but to add some sort of fish oil and food to help the primrose oil work properly. ciao

I use primrose oil on a regular basis for my adrenal crew as supportive treatment together with deslorelin and melatonin. I only use it the first week on a daily basis, afterwards every second day and then twice a week instead of other oils.

OK thank you, I have been adding it to her food in tiny amounts, on especially itchy days, so about once a week.
