Hey, I read the sticky here about taurine and it said that the animals will get a lot of it through regular meals and that too much taurine can cause problems in omnivores but they're not sure about carnivores. And I'm worried that 500mg of taurine supplement a day would be too much? At one point it says, "When feeding a raw diet to your ferrets, you can expect them to receive their taurine in largest concentrations from hearts, brains, and dark muscle meats like thighs." If thighs are high in taurine as well as some dark meats should I still give 500mg taurine on days I feed him..say a chicken leg? Which according to the thread is 3780 mg per kg? I mean obviously a chicken leg isn't a kg, let alone even a pound. It's probably several grams though, and that still means a lot of taurine. Then, I read this, "I know many people use the NOW brand of taurine powder. Do you need to suuplement 500mg per day? No, definitely not, not unless your ferret has a diagnosed heart condition that may benefit from higher than usual taurine levels. Aim for over a period of a week to give about 1400mg – which is 200mg per day if you want to balance it daily – but in reality, having it balanced with every meal is probably overkill." Which really confuses me considering I've been told several places to give 500mg taurine supplement a day? I'm so confused. Help?

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Taurine is water soluble and as far as I know they can't overdose on it. Giving them way, way to much isn't good of course as it could stress their system but unless you are I wouldn't worry. Why are you supplementing at all? Not able to find heart meat?

Yeah that's the article I read. I know it's water soluble but it says on there that there is research showing it can build up kinda in omnivores? But they weren't too sure about obligate carnivores. And I just wanted to you know, make sure that it wouldn't cause my baby boy problems. It also says at the bottom that you shouldn't have to supplement 500mg? Does that mean in addition to a diet that has weekly heart meals, or not at all? Yeah, I'm supplementing until the butcher shop opens. It's insane to buy the Tyson Chicken Gizzards and Hearts and get no hearts.

If you are following the Frankenprey menu, your little ones will get enough Taurine. You won't need to supplement. If you are feeding commercial ferret kibble, they will get enough Taurine. They will also get alot of not so good stuff. Freeze dried raw for felines has Taurine, but as I understand it, Ferrets need just a little more Taurine than cats do. Commercial grinds have organs in them.
I fell for that silly Tyson gizzards package also. Sometimes, you get Lucky and find Two! Look for a local Asian Market. They carry hearts. Call some of your local butchers. I found a butcher who orders from a chicken farmer. But their cost was much higher than the Asian Markets.

Oh trust me, I've been digging around every market around! We even drove 45 minutes away to an Asian market that apparently didn't exist. Our Asian market doesn't carry much. They have intestines, large bones, quail, whole ducks, duck tongues, and goat. That's pretty much it. No organs. We have no local butchers and at one of the stores I talked to one of their workers was planning on opening one in October. Actually, I think the closest butcher is about an hour away without traffic. My problem is that I don't have hearts as of now, nowhere local sells them but the butcher shop that will open will give me access to hearts and other organs. While I don't have hearts now, I will be getting them later. Until I can get said hearts, I'm going to try and use a taurine supplement. My confusion is that taurine is in high amounts in dark meats, and whether or not I should lower the taurine supplement amounts on days he eats dark meat?

No, you don't need to lower the amount. If you look at our soupie recipe, we suggest chicken thighs. They are high in Taurine, and we put 1-2 hearts in the soupie recipe.
Rabbit is low in Taurine, so if you were feeding alot of rabbit, then you would want to supplement.
Have you tried looking for other hearts, like beef/pork/lamb/duck etc...
You're in Auburn Al. Fort Benning is in Columbus GA. 45 minutes from you. Any Military base is going to have good Asian markets and Asian restaurants. Try googling "find Oriental Supermarkets near Columbus Ga". I'll bet you will find a good market there.

Ah. Good point! I had never looked at the soupie recipe because Tinker is past it! Yeah I've been looking for hearts of any kind...besides human of course. Holy crap, that's a lot of Asian markets. Might have to go next weekend, I don't think the boyfriend is down for anymore organ hunting this weekend!

I spent twenty years in the Air Force. The best Thai restaurants are always by a base. Do you like Thai food?

I've not had it much, but what I can eat of it yes (I'm a picky eater and a vegetarian).
