Dr B says Alice feels bloated (I agree) but she got no fluids from an abdominal tap, and she's dehydrated again. Temp, resp and heart rate normal. Best guess is intestinal gas, due to IBD. Alice got sub-q fluids because she's not taking enough in. I get to give her that 2x a day until she perks up. Plus we're to push probiotics with feedings, plus children's gas-x 4x/day, plus her pred 2x. I asked about food allergies, particularly turkey, and she doesn't think she shows any signs of allergic reaction. Dr B said there's no need to change pred dose, or antibiotics, because we can't really say she has an infection, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. So the good news is she may see Birthday #6 in December, and this visit was under $60. The bad news is I have to sub-q twice a day for a few days, and if it's IBD, it can go in cycles of good and bad, like it has 2 months in a row.

Well I'm so glad that they don think it's an allergy & that she'll see her next b-day. Hopefully, the meds and sub q's will perk her up in no time. I'll be thinking about Alice hoping she dooking around soon.
I want to see your vet. I can't even get in the door at a vet in NJ for under $65-$70. Man NJ is expensive. Sigh....

The fluids will do her a world of good and you should see a real improvement in how she feels within 24 hrs. It's really not that bad to do. Granted, it's easier with dogs or cats but it's not all that bad with ferrets.

I hate myself. We got the carafate and amox. Vet also gave me Buprenex which I can inject or give orally. That scrip was $50. Gave her a shot and 1.5 dose of amoxi to get it jump started. went to put the amoxi in the fridge in the ferret med/food shelf and we found Buprenex leftover from Poppy. It's good for another 4 months. If I had known I still had that I would have given it yesterday or Wednesday. The down side is that it pretty much knocks fuzzies out, and even tho even tho Al is getting half the dosage Poppy did, it makes it tough to feed every 2-4 hours. At this point, it should keep her comfy long enough for the amoxi to start doing its job, if it helps at all. But, if she keeps getting the Bup, how will we know when she feels better if she's loopy from the drugs?

unclejoe, if Love will pull her through, then Alice will get better. I know how hard this is for you and Dar. My thoughts have been with you and I'll be sending positive and healing thoughts to your sweet Alice.

Thank you everyone. It's upsetting how much the cost of drugs has gone up. The last time I got carafate it was under $20. This scrip is $45. No changes in Alice's condition so far, and I'm waiting for the vet to call again. This is what she's on now (if she gets pain meds again, it will be 1/2 prescribed dose) Pepcid will be added after I talk to vet. The pain med buprenorphine wipes her out for 8-9 hours so she can't even eat, pee or poop. Alice's prescribed dose is HALF what Poppy's was. (different vet) We're starting to wonder if that dosage may have killed Poppy before the antibiotics had a chance to work, but we'll never know. BTW, it appears that all pharmacies label ferrets as rodents.

I'm so sorry she's so sick and has to take all of that, hopefully it will start working soon and she will feel better. A friend of mine had a ferret about 1-2 years ago with problems that Alice has, and they found out that she had some sort of heart condition that was causing him to be lethargic, dehydrated, and many other symptoms. Has her heart been ruled out? Just a thought.

I hate how meds are a double-edged sword. Get-well wishes to Alice, hope she feels better!

I can't say it couldn't be a heart issue, but her heart rate is normal and it sounds strong and regular. I'm no cardiologist, but neither the vet or hear anything like a murmur or arhythmia. Of course, she hasn't had an EKG or anything.
BTW, I'm sorry I'm not keeping up with the forum. I'm a bit preoccupied, trying to get normal life stuff done between feedings, meds ad work. Dar is keeping detailed records of everything from BMs to all the med timing.

Alice was helped across the Bridge at 2 o'clock. Nothing we did helped at all, and her kidneys finally quit. She was peeing out every drop I gave her sub-q. She's probably been in kidney failure for a while, but not much could be done about it anyway. We couldn't watch her keep declining, she looked to be in pain, and all the pain med did was knock her out. I'll put a memorial in the Bridge page later. Right now I have to go bury her next to Poppy. My beautiful little girl with the soft new coat.

Oh unclejoe, I am so sorry for your loss. Alice was a beautiful and special ferret and she will be very missed. She fought a hard fight and so did you, doing everything in your power to help her. Alice lived an amazing life in your care, and she will never be forgotten.
