On September 5th and 6th, Petco is having a nationwide 50% off sale on all ferrets (yes, 50% off. That's $75 for each ferret.) They seem to be somewhat hush-hush about it, because I can't find anything on their website talking about it, but I know that my local Petco is participating, and ferret shelters in surrounding states are talking about it. Ferret shelters are asking that people attend these events, not necessarily to purchase ferrets, but to ensure that the people who are getting ferrets are well informed. Due to the fact that ferrets will be literally half price, it is likely that many people will buy a ferret on impulse, without knowing anything about them or how to care for them. Massachusetts Ferret Friends has asked that anyone who is able to go to their local Petco on that weekend, to message them ( here is their facebook page, or email President@maferrets.org). They have made flyers for individuals to hand out to potential buyers, and they will send you a copy so that you can hand them out. If you want to go a step further, you can ask your local petco if you can set up an information table, where you will give out flyers and answer questions. MaFF is not the only shelter doing this, however, and if you are not sure whether your local shelter is participating, you should send them a message. If people buy ferrets on impulse, it is extremely likely that these ferrets will end up being abused and mistreated, and are likely to soon end up in an already overcrowded animal shelter. Please, help if you are able to. If you cannot personally attend an event, at least make sure that your local shelter knows that this is happening and will set up an information table. Thanks!

when I went to my semi local petco. The have quite a bit of literature about ferret that they give with the ferret. They also have a sign at their display that covers some of the important fact about ferrets. I am not sure if they are all the same, But they have to be since they have this all set up in a Petco where ferrets are illegal to sell. So they must just set them all up the same. That does not mean that the people that buy ferrets will read it. so It is still a great idea to have someone there to inform them prior to the spontaneous purchase. There are a lot of other pet stores that sell ferrets and they sell them like any other product with no info at all. So at least Petco tries to inform. they have this on a big sign in near the ferret display www.petco.com/assets/caresheets/small%20animals/Ferret.pdf

You are very right, Petco does try to inform new pet owners. I'm just passing on the words of my somewhat-local ferret shelters, who really want to set up information tables at each Petco. Since I haven't seen anything on this forum yet, I thought it'd be a good idea to make a post, so that anyone out there who is willing to help, can.

I posted about the event a few days ago. The event is actually the 6th & 7th. I just moved from Montana to Utah, so it does seem to be country wide.
You make a great point about educating people though. Especially diet, since Petco pushed the Marshals food. My husband is really great for educating the employees every time we go in. He is so much better with words than I am.

Wow, that's cheaper than I can get ferrets for with my employee discount at my work. Good thing the closest Petco is an hour and a half away, because I'm not able to get another ferret currently. lol

I bought all three of my ferrets from petco in.order to save them. They were 50% off back in april except zero who I bought two minths earlier and he was full price. They had ear mites and fleas and they also had bacteria in thrir bellies. The vet didn't kbow what to say she was speechless. I had to give them antibiotics and had tests performed in thdm so to be sure that they didbt cone with anything else. So yeah I think its a great opportunity to rescue ferrets from petco.

Purchasing a ferret is not rescuing by any means, its buying a ferret so marshalls will breed more ferrets to put in their place. Who spay/neuter early (thank them for the adrenal disease) descent them (which shouldn't be done), all done about 3 weeks old then the kits are ripped away from mom thrown in tiny shipping boxs/cages all smashed together and then out being sold to stores like petco who do not know how to take care of the ferrets most of the time and sold to complete idiots who shouldn't even own a goldfish. Purchasing is supporting the viscous cycle, not saving. Saving - go to local shelter, adopt one off of craigslist or somethings those ferrets are with the idiots that pet co sold too and need help.
Our pet co has literature I read through it once and things I found are horrible! Feeding fruit/veggie, one said feed hay? (wth?!!) give lil rubber toys for playing (there goes a blockage!).
Sometimes you can help if you talk to your local pet co managers some will try to listen, I got ours to remove them from those stupid aquariums and put them in a locked ferret nation. I donated them my homemade bedding to get them started, informed them of proper toys for them to play with and proper litter (they were using dusty clay cat litter, they switched to news pellets). They couldn't do nothing about the crappy marshall food because of the agreement with the stupid marshall. But.... They did all this change with me being persistent and helping them get started with beds! It was good to see the poor kits in a better enviroment AND its teaching the idiots who know nothing randomly purchasing a ferret on what the ferret should be living in. Hopefully it saves those kits from being in another aquarium permanently (can't count the times on craigslist I saw this, so sad!)
So if your able to please go to your local stores that sell kits to help by providing them with info on how they should be living. For my 2 local stores this made a difference

Honestly, I think something is going on with Marshall's breeding stock. The percentage of genetically diseased ferrets is way too high now and they are showing symptoms at a much earlier age. I don't think I'll ever enter another Petco again.
If and when I'd want another weasel after Crystal passes, I'll save up and get a Utah hand raised mink instead of a ferret.

The conspiracy-minded part of me says they breed sickly animals on purpose, since their business relies on ferrets dying and people buying more. That also accounts for how many of their products are terribly unhealthy or outright toxic.

I'm sure many of us would feel distressed thinking about this, but in a society where people's poor health is treated like a profitable resource, it is not hard to deduce that animals are suffering far worse in the name of profit.

Ok I have to ask... how does one acquire a mink? There's a guy in Ohio on YouTube who trains them, AFAIK he buys them from mink farmers.
