I saw my 6 months old ferret do this more than once this week. He is licking my other ferrets' poop. He sniffed first, and took a big lick, and he even appeared to be munching on it... I couldn't tell for sure. I quickly picked him up and inspected his mouth. He was licking his mouth, but I didn't see anything in there. Is this a normal behavior? It's so gross! He is not a dog! Is he going literally crazy? He's been separated from the group for a week or so, due to him being in rut.

LOL....he's testing others output to see if anyone else is coming into season, so he doesn't have to alone....He's not really tasting or at least he shouldn't be. He's smelling. It's still disgusting but I've watched the hobs do this. Usually it's urine. Sometimes they will go as far as tasting the urine. If the stools he was sampling were female, a female's stool is often mixed with urine. He's still learning so he may have messed things up. What does your breeder say about his behaviour? He's rather precocious if he's in rut at 6 months ciao

Yes, the stool he was tasting was most likely my girls'...
Maybe he's just confused. I have had Marshall ferrets for a while, but these guys are my first "whole" ferrets, and I'm discovering new aspects of ferrets everyday. I can almost have a civil discussion just about any topic with my Marshall ones, but these guys seem more like.... wild animals.
I have not asked the breeder about this behavior. Maybe I should ask her if others do this also.
