A woman who lives a few houses down from me has 11 ferrets (last I checked it was 11, could me more or less now). She let's them free roam the house, which is all fine and dandy if you ferret proof your home and exercise caution to ensure the ferrets' safety. The problem is that she doesn't seem to care about those things. The first time we found one of her ferrets outside was two years ago. I didn't think much of it then, 'cause you know, sh*$ happens... mine have gotten out on two separate occasions as well, so there was no judgment and I felt no reason to be concerned. But since that first incident, we have found her ferrets outside at least 4 other times, and a few other people in the neighbourhood have found them as well. Just yesterday a neighbour found a ferret in his garbage bin outside and another swimming in his pool, both belonged to this woman of course. And a neighbour, last winter, found one of her ferrets dead in his yard. I have no idea how to deal with this. I hoped she'd have learned her lesson by now, but it seems that she just doesn't care. I remember one time when we I brought one of her ferrets home to her, her response was "She's my favourite! I was just going to head to the pet store to get a new one." Umm... what? Ugh, I just don't know what to do or if I should do anything. I have no idea what kind of life they have, as I've never actually been inside her house, but something tells me she shouldn't have pets.

I would threaten to report her if she doesn't take better care of them. If she's this consistently careless with them, they could all end up dead sooner rather than later.

Honestly? I'd just start keeping them or taking them to a shelter. If she doesn't care enough to keep them from getting outside, why should she care if one of them goes permanently missing?

Based on her interactions with @mallinds, it sounds like she would buy and neglect more ferrets. The woman needs to be told that she is putting the animals in harm's way and face consequences if it continues.

It doesn't say where Mallinds is located, but if they're in the US, I don't think the authorities would really do anything. There aren't really any laws or anything about neglecting small animals here, it's really hard to get any kind of serious response if you report someone for neglecting an animal that's not a horse, dog, or cat.

In my State, it may be enough to convict somebody of violation of animal cruelty laws if they repeatedly allow their pets to escape and die outside.

Unfortunately in the majority of places as long as the animal has good and shelter authorities won't step in. So unless it is illegal in your area for animals to roam outside odds are nothing can be done. If you have a local ferret rescue try talking to them.

Wow, what a d1lema 1 agree w1th Sherry, talk to some local ferret rescues or shelters. See, 1f they can help. 1s she an older, (and a l1ttle daffy), try talk1ng to some fam1ly. Maybe you and your ne1ghbors could set up a ne1ghborhood ferret watch. Just k1dd1ng (sort of). You can't very well patrol the ne1ghborhood 1n un1forms and marked cars, w1th flashl1ghts, search1ng for lost ferrets. But 1n a perfect world, we could. (giggle)

sounds like this person has a mental disability. From the sounds of it she is probably an absent minded hoarder. she probably lacks the mental capacity to keep her brain on one thing, This would explain the ferrets escaping and lack of follow through. She needs help.
Obviously does not have the ability to care for the little guys, such a shame.
