A friend that we know from an online game has some ferrets, and recently his youngest, a little hob named Raffles got into some unknown and unsupervised mischief and... got hurt!
They think Raffles might have climbed up to the top of their Ferret Nation 182 cage, and then fell off... but they're not sure...
Either way, the poor guy is in bad shape; and his "ferrent daddy" is beside himself with grief because they're not in the best of financial positions and the vet bills started piling up; and well the poor little guys survivability is in question.
Anyway, they could not afford to leave him with the Vet any longer so Raffles is home but confined to a smaller cage where the rest of their ferret family constantly wanders over to check on him.
But, they're still left with a hefty Vet Bill that they need help with!
They set up the following hoping to get some help...
We gave them a link to this website, told them all about what a wonderful community this is, so they might show up here at some point as well...

Has he been able to get a confirmed diagnosis from his own vet looking at the tests that were done?

I haven't heard back from them since Sunday, the 27th... so all I know is the same as whats been posted on their fundraising page.
From what I gather, Raffles was sent home, because they could no longer afford to keep him at the Vet, and could not afford many of the tests that Raffles needed. They had a basic examination, an Xray and some blood work done; but the costs were steadily climbing up over $500; and on top of that he told me the Vet was charging a hefty boarding fee/per day, just to keep Raffles there for "observation".
The Vet believes there is some pretty bad lower back trauma and maybe some head trauma; and they "think" this resulted from a fall... but they (as of the last we talked) really still have absolutely no idea how it happened. They just found him in the morning, he had somehow gotten out of the cage and was laying on the floor unable to move. He had apparently tried to hide but was not able too. they don't even know for sure for how long the poor little guy may have been laying on the floor in that condition; it sounded to me like the whole thing happened over night while everyone was asleep and they found him in the morning.
He's only about 8 months old and they have absolutely no idea how he got out of the cage, which is a Ferret Nation 182; and for that matter they have absolutely no idea what he might have fallen from, if it is a fall he suffered from... but they, think, he may have somehow found a way to get on top of that 182, and maybe fell off the top of it.
They had always been well prepared for the standard wellness check ups every year and such, but were never financially prepared for any emergencies, so this has quickly depleted what little savings they had.
I'm hoping to see Raffles Daddy before the weekend, so I'll try to get more info when I can!
Just thinking about Raffles though, has really made ME more paranoid all through out this week while Malcolm and Serenity are out playing, they both have a habit of wanting to try to crawl up on top of their cage and I've become extra paranoid with preventing them from climbing it.

I lost a wee one to falling from a FN cage. I've no idea how she did it but I can put together a possibility considering I've watched the spawnlings to exactly the same thing. The ferret nation entrance or first floor and the ferret nation shelf is exactly the right height to allow a ferret to reach up grab and pull free of the floor to try and climb in. This motion allows their bodies swing under the cage, making them loose their grip and fall. They fall on the shelf below, the corner ridge hitting them right above the hips along the spine. I lost my wee jill to one such fall. I know people don't think to much of their little ones cage climbing but so many accidents have occurred doing this and a lot of little ones have seriously injured their spines in such falls. My wee jill was just a little over a year. I wish them luck. Some chiropractic care might help, even acupuncture if they can obtain it. ciao

I hadn't heard from Raffles' "ferrent" for awhile; but they messaged me a couple nights ago.
Told me that Raffles seems to be doing much better. Still has not regained the use of his hind legs, but he has started twitching them as though trying to move them, so they see this as a good sign.
They have made him a little wheel chair thingy that they can strap him into and he can pull him self around on his front legs; and eat from the food bowl now.
I am being told, that Raffles absolutely loves this, and has been zipping all over the place!
So sounds like things are progressing positively for them.

Ugh lost my reply! Thu should do massage, exercises, and water therapy with their little one. It's all stuff they can do themselves at home. Years ago a woman found a little girl paralyzed in the rear in the UK. After several months of intensive work she was actually able to start walking again! Here is the thread, there is a lot of really good info in it in things they can try: holisticferret.proboards.com/thread/5217/advice-ferret
