Nate & I were walking Rico this morning and half way through our walk Rico just stopped and wouldn't move. He has never done that before. Nate just thought he was tired so he picked him up and upon closer inspection his nail is bleeding!! What does this look like?! What should we do? Do we need to take him to the vet? He is not limping and is playing eating & drinking fine. His toe has stopped bleeding and we have cleaned the wound.

You can stop the bleeding with corn starch or stiptik powder. Other than that I'd just keep and eye on it. Are you sure it is the nail and not something he stepped on and cut is paw pads or got stuck in there?

When nails get long they start getting caught on fabric, bedding, carpet, ect. I once saw a ferret that got his nail caught in a hanging sleeper as he was crawling out. He ended up hanging by one nail for over an hour. Ended up breaking his toe and his nail. Very important to keep toe nails trimmed. I trim my ferrets nails once a week for the front ones and every 2 weeks for the back ones.
I hope it is just his nail and it grows back properly.
After closer inspection of the photo. It looks like he got his nail caught on something and it broke. He should be fine now that the bleeding has stopped Sent from my SCH-I535 using proboards

I agree with msav. I've seen it a couple times. You can try a dab of neosporin (no acetaminophen or ibuprophen in it) on it to prevent infection

Update! Rico is A-Okay!! He had a small cut above his little footsie! We took him to our vet and she put some antibiotics on him and wrapped his little leg up. He is still running wild even with his poor little foot all wrapped up! She said it will be fine to take off in the morning! Thanks everyone for all your help!! @poncesmom I gave Rico a hug from you! He is sure enjoying all of this extra attention! (As if we don't give him enough already!!)

Glad to hear he is okay! I was going to say that from the pics the blood looks like it is coming from the nail bed or above the nail, rather than the nail itself. Split nails can be bad bc they can crack up into the bone and infection can travel up into the bones of the toe. And with the things animals put their feet in, infection risks can be high. The vet clinic I worked at always treated broken, ripped, cracked, split etc nails as relatively emergent. Better to pay for a nail removal than a toe amputation when infection spreads or arthritis later in life.
