Despite my busy schedule with upcoming exams, projects, and presentations, I decided to purchase some new toys and thought of making a dig box. This will be my first dig box that I have ever made, so I'll need some tips.
I was thinking ping pong balls were better besides rice... Though I think my ferret would enjoy the feeling of rice instead. I was more worried of maybe him getting rice in his ears, possibly get stuck/in somewhere where it shouldn't be, etc. Just those risks. Is it ever to likely happen? Also, where should I purchase the rice? Is there a specific kind of rice that I have to use? I'm South Korean so I eat rice on a regular basis but at times I find rice bugs in them and I don't want my ferret to be in a rice box with them...
As for ping pongs, where should I get those? Recommendations on the size of the box?
Thanks!

For a rice dig box, I use 20lbs long grain rice And although they do accidentally ingest some at times, it passes right through. As for getting in ears, etc I've never heard of it happening.

My guys will full on snorkel through the rice and submerge themselves completely. Never had an issue with rice being stuck anywhere it shouldn't be or falling into ears etc. I have a 100lb rice dig bin and a ping pong ball pit with almost 1500 balls in it. They don't tend to poop in the ball pit, but they do poop in the rice bin. At least now they only poop down one end of it and sleep/play in the other.

I made a ping pong ball pit for my girls just before Christmas . Neither of them like it. I don't think they like how unsteady they feel while on the ball as they look really stressed when I put them in there and neither one will go back in willingly. They much prefer their rice box.
As for rice getting in their ears it is unlikely. Take a look at the fur around their ears and when you try to clean them it is difficult because they can "pull-in / flatten" their ears. When they do this, the fur covers the ear opening. Most tunnelling / burrowing animals can do this.

I've got to try the ping ball thing. I think that's about the only box content I've never tried. ciao

What kind of rice do you guys recommend? Where did you get yours? (I'm in Canada). I prefer rice and so will Ramsey (I'm sure). I heard some may digest some rice but that's already been covered by Sherry. So no worries about that. Thanks everyone for the advice and help.

I just went to an ethnic store (Indian or Asian) and bought the cheapest long grain rice in the size I wanted (they usually have it in various sizes up to 50 lbs bags).

I just use regular long grain. You can buy it in large bags...that's all you need for a box (unless it's really huge). Quite often it's on sale for around $10, I've managed to pick it up for $8....it offers great play for a few weeks or months as long as no one gets naughty in the box ciao

I buy 50lb bags at my local wholesale club for $17 of whatever cheap, white, long grained rice is available.

I used play sand for quite a while. If they can dig thru that, as well as create a warren under the house that involved removing at least 1/4 cubic yard of sand, the rice will not be a problem. They had no eye or ear problems from it. If you have kats, make sure that if the dig box has sand, rice or anything else that resembles litter, that you keep the box covered. I only left it open once and a kitty used it for potty purposes.
