I am wondering if it is because the ferret is believed to be a descendant of the polecat and thus not technically a different species whereas say breeding a weasel or mink and a ferret probably would result in a sterile off spring? From the reading I have done, the way I understand it is that ferrets are essentially domesticated polecats who have been bred domestically over centuries. So think of a wolf and a domesticated dog. A domesticated dog is essentially a subspecies of wolf. You can breed a dog and a wolf to create a hybrid. Ferrets are polecats are very similar. I think of ferrets as the "dog" subspecies to the European Polecat "wolf." This may be a rather simplified way of looking at it, but it's the best analogy I've been able to find.

this is a little late, but had to chime in. I have a little hybrid jill Named Tina. I have had ferrets since 1996 and been breeding since 2005. Tina hands down is the sweetest most playful loving little jill I have ever had. She has never once nipped, let alone bit. She is possessive of her toys and her "people" LOL! Also she is very fast and very smart!
