It has been my experience that hormones and hormone-related activities fluctuate in ferrets whether or not they have been altered. My altered ferrets have been fluctuating with their degree of "adrenal behavior" for the past month. Also, even though they all have full coats, their shedding process seems to start/stop/start this year...the coat transition is not as smooth as in a non-adrenal ferret.
SO the short answer is yes, altered ferrets do experience hormone-relate fluctuations just as intact ferrets do.

So I've schedualed an appointment with the other vet, to see how we get along and to get a second opinion. Unfortunatly that appointmet is not till this coming Friday.
Tonight I noticed that there seemed to be a little bit of crusty stuff on Snickers vulva... pale yellow- looks almost like pus (bleck!) This seems to point to some sort of infection after all...? We e-mailed Dr. Morgan to ask for her opinion and see if we should bring her back in or what, but I would like to hear what you all have to say about this latest symptom. Other than the newly icky appearance, Snickers seems about the same- which is to say, her usual mischievous self. She is maybe a little bit mellower and quieter than usual, or it could be power of suggestion. If she is, it is minimal.

It does indeed sound like she's got a vag infection. Now, don't take too deep a breath of relief. Often, when a little female goes adrenal and her vulva swells, she is now open for infections much more readily than a female that is not suffering from adrenal. That's not saying that she doesn't just have an infection. I just want you to be prepared. I will keep my fingers crossed that it's just an infection and a simple antibiotic will fix her problem ciao

Since I can't get her into a vet tonight, is there anything I can do to make her comfy (like warm water to rinse off the area?) I presume that this sort of infection is not a life threatening emergency, but I don't want her to be uncomfortable if there is something I can do to make it better before we can get some anti-biotics.

Sinnead developed a vag infection due to the enlarged, opened vulva. I gave her bottom soaks twice a day in a sink of warm water. Inside of a week or so, it cleared itself up nicely. And once the lupron took effect, her vulva went down as well. You can also use a bit of baking soda in the bath, since it will draw infection out, just make sure to rinse her well.
