I thought the olive oil was to entice the other guys to groom the oiled ferret's ears...and possibly to help loosen up ear wax. But I could be wrong.
Funny how that search is...as if there were no important 3-letter words...

Some do say the olive oil will suffocate them. However, whenever mine have had to have treatments for mites, I get the drops from the vet. They don't seem to groom that out of each others ears.

My girl Fiona is the only one who really grooms another ferret's ears I don't see it happen very often for that matter.

Hi no one knows for certain if olive oil kills ear mites ( some say it does some say mineral oil does or almond oil ) I would say to be certain buy drops from your vet then after the course give the ears a good clean with olive oil ( I use frontline kitten and puppy spray for fleas and ticks and I can honestly say since using it and that has been years lol I have not suffered from ear mites ) could just be a coincidence but it seems to work for my guys and I am not complaining lol take care bye for now Bev

Those drops you put on the nape of the neck (Revolution, maybe Advantage Multi) should work. I think Revolution is an alcohol base so doesnt last very long. You can also bathe them after (not sure how long you have to wait, maybe 24 hours).

Of course it is what I buy when we do have them. So I'll pick up the drops from the vet.

I just finished treating my crew (totally disgusted because I hate to use chemicals) with advantage....so, you're looking at 13 ferrets, 3 cats (in excess of 15 lbs ) and a dog 165lbs....for a little over $100. Not bad really at least for up here. ciao

I couldn't seem to get ahead of it. The colder weather didn't hit soon enough. I'm not sure where we picked them up, vets, park...having a dog that goes everywhere with you doesn't help keeping the wee biting insects under control....could be anywhere. This is the first year that we've not been able to keep them under control by just holistic methods. I've not had mites though, so that is a benefit ciao

This is what i use. I use a small brush for painting and i brush it lightly in the ear and then i rub it in. i do that for about 4 days straight. Then i use it once every 3 weeks to keep them away. www.thornitearpowder.com/

I wouldn't mess around too long. We think ear mites is what lead to Naobi having a nasty ear infection that punctured her ear drum and went to her brain/became systemic. She has permanent damage to her brain and has lost most of her vision. Her ears never seemed that dirty either. I know this sounds extreme, but I would rather see you use revolution than let it go. If you buy the 15lb dose you can usually divide it between 3 ferrets. 3-4 tubes would probably do it. That's about 50 bucks or so.
