We lost Dozer tuesday night.. It was time to put all the ferrets up for bedtime and we couldn't find him. He loves his squeakers so we squeaked inside and outside of the house and still no Dozer. After 2 hours we decided to call it quits (it was 10pm by now) and try first thing in the morning. I couldn't figure out how he could have gotten outside. It just wasn't possible.. Tim went to plug his phone in to charge and saw him stuck behind the nightstand. He had jumped onto it and slid over the edge and got his head stuck. He suffocate to death. 50ft behind me while I was watching TV that afternoon... he died. There was nothing but a half wall seperating us but I didnt hear him. He died alone and scared and I didn't even know it.
Everyone keeps telling me its not my fault. I feel like it is... maybe i'm not experienced enough to know that was a danger. I usually watch TV in the bedroom too, that day I just didnt. If I had been in there I would have seen/heard him. He was only 2 years old.. this is the second baby we've lost to an accident and I'm devastated. Theres a huge hole in my heart. I'll never see him perk up in the cage at the sound of an N-bone bag, have him chase me down because I dared to squeak a toy.. He was Gizmo's buddy and now he's lost. I'm so so angry and i'm scared there are other dangers that I just don't see. I told Tim I almost wish that day he had asked to bring home Vaeda and Anks, our first two ferrets.. that I had said no. My cat's have never caused 1/3 of this heart ache.. and what is it about this month that is so cursed for me? Two years ago I lost zoey to a similar accident, she got her head stuck in the bars of a recliner and died.. last year Sam died of cancer, auggie had to be put to sleep because of advanced adrenal disease, Naobi had a systemic infection and is now blind and deaf because of it.. Hannable almost died of heat stroke because he climbed up into my closet and got stuck in a box. Its this month, its always a month of death and pain for us. I'm so very tired and stressed. I can't eat, I can't sleep.. I just keep picturing poor Dozer. I just want him back. I want to scream and throw things. This just isnt fair.. I work so hard to keep everything safe for them and its not enough. I don't think it will ever be enough.
DIP my sweet baby, I'm so so sorry I failed you. I love you so much and I miss you with every breath I take.

OMG, I am so very, very sorry I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through right now. But I for one am VERY glad you didn't say no with Vaeda and Anks. You are a wonderful ferrent and have given a loving home to so many ferrets who need you. Yes, it was a tragic, possibly avoidable accident. However- it was just that. An accident. Yes, you will blame yourself. That's normal. However- hindsight is exactly that. Hindsight. I can guarantee that particular danger is removed. These guys keep us guessing all the time. They have so many close calls. So many preventable accidents. But- we are only human, and faulty. We are not perfect, we are not omniscient. And we will always feel guilty, whether it was an accident, an illness, a disease. But we are also here for you, and will be weeping with you {{{{{hugs}}}}}

It was senseless and stupid. Just one inch.. one more inch away from the wall and he wouldnt have died. I had it pulled out, just not enough. Now I'm afraid to let them out, where is the next danger? what else will take their lives that I don't even think is dangerous?

Go through the house again. Make sure everything is at least 3" away from the wall. That's about all you can do beyond what you have already done. Please don't let this eat at you too much. Your other wee ones all need you

Don't beat yourself up. You can never fully ferret-proof your house. Unfortunately they have a talent for finding danger. It is just a trade-off to having free-roam ferrets. Even inside a dedicated ferret room, or even in a CAGE some have found ways to get hurt or killed. You do the best you can, but at the end of the day, you can never make the world 100% safe for them. But think about how much joy they get from having space and freedom to roam and play. I am sure that is worth it, their lives are so short already, at least they can live happy with freedom and room to play. Even with the risks, that is better than being cooped up in a cage all the time IMO.

It's so tragic when their life is cut short by an accident, this goes for any critter... two legged or four.
I am so very sorry, my heart goes out to you and yours. It's normal to feel guilty, we all do/would in that situation. You didn't intentionally place a trap for little Dozer. Nor were you aware of the danger, otherwise we all know you would have changed it! It is NOT your fault. It was purely an accident. I can't tell you to not feel bad/guilty. Like I said it's normal, but as every one else is saying don't let it eat you up too badly. Accept it as best as you are able and cry your little heart out... it's okay. It suck and it's terrible... but it's okay. Take some time to grieve now. Don't regret knowing ferrets too harshly. Sadly, they just come with a very heavy emotional price. --- WHICH IS WHY WE ARE ALL HERE AT THIS FORUM!

OMG, I'm so sorry for you, the loss of your wee one. Do not beat yourself up (I know you will ) It's hard enough to loose them to disease, but accidents leave you feeling sick and hurting even deeper. Unfortunately, these little one have a propensity for getting into trouble (they sadly lack common sense). They just move from one misadventure to another, often with tragic results. You could cage these little ones and wrap them in cotton wool and they'd still find trouble. It's what they are. You could do that, but they wouldn't be happy. So, we play the risks, we try and keep them safe and let them be what they are...mischievious little souls who are only truly alive when they're running the edge. I'm going to light a healing candle for you. May it's warm glow ease your pain and help you see the light. I will light a travelling candle for Dozer, who is busy causing much trouble at the bridge. Gentle journey little one, you have left an empty space that cannot be filled ciao

Is it ironic that he bought Dozer for me when Zoey died? and they both died of the same thing ... I thought if any of them would die to an accident it would be Hannable, hes so bad, always into trouble and had too many near misses.. but not Dozer. My heart hurts so bad

It will, and it's normal. It shows you are a GREAT pet owner. You really love your pets and care for them and that is the absolute best home they can be in... no matter how long they last.
