I bought some of these last week in an order with other toys from Petco. www.petco.com/product/118020/Petco-Safari-Feather-Ball-Cat-Toys.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearchI've had these out for the ferrets for only a few days and they already destroyed them. Annoying, but not normally an issue. Inside these balls however is a bunch of Styrofoam! I noticed white flecks all over the floor tonight and followed the source to one of these toys that had been half ripped apart. I threw it away, picked up the foam bits that I could and immediately tore the ferret room apart looking for the other two. One was still intact, the third was starting to leak its Styrofoam center as well. I threw the other two away as well. I've put pumpkin in everyone's dinner and laxed two ferrets acting off. Zar'thun has tried pooping twice in a short amount of time and only pooped mucous, and Stormageddon ignored dinner entirely. He never turns up a meal. Both will be watched carefully the next few days. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on these. tThey are poorly made and even worse, extremely dangerous.

Thanks for the heads-up. I really hope your ferrets are not blocked with styrofoam Finn likes to pick out a toy when we go to Petco so I appreciate heads-up posts like this. Maybe we should have a dedicated thread for dangerous toy warnings. For example, we bought a dangerous toy last time we were at petco. It didn't seem dangerous at first glance, it's a hard plastic ball with a rattle inside, covered with fabric. Finn LOVES it. However, within 5 minutes, he was tearing the weak, stretchy fabric off of the plastic ball, and could have eaten it. The fabric appeared to have been glued to the plastic ball with hot glue. Definitely not safe, one of the chewers almost certainly would have chewed on that nice rubbery glue and/or the fabric attached to it, and could have eaten it.

Fingers crossed your wee ones can pass the stuff if they've eaten it! That's scary. And Mike- that's actually not a bad idea. I know my Boris would be on rubber like a shot, so I made sure he never had access. Until I bought a small package of cat toys(sorted and tossed what wasn't safe). His favourite was a longish round toy with a bell in it. On the ends there was a hard plastic which should have been safe, but he cracked it open and sure enough- the ends were actually foam rubber!

*sigh* ferrets... Is there any pet seemingly more determined to get itself killed?

Nope, don't think so! Especially when I read about them walking up to snarling slavering dogs thinking "are you my new friend?", or trying to walk INTO a burning fireplace

Llamas maybe? ;D I hear they're quite the fighters when it comes to protecting the pasture from predators. I've had ferrets rip jingle bells off of toys before, rip off fake feathery things... it's so hard to fins something that is truly "safe". All you can do is check their toys regularly. I'm pretty sure the foam in the room is fairly new, I think I would have noticed it last night if they had did it during playtime yesterday. Here's to hoping it was only the few hours they were out tonight.

I actually have one like that but the ball color was black and feather was red. I picked it up from Petco as well, but by the dollar bin and 50 cent cat toys. They actually are pretty cheap like Mikey said. Same thing happened with Sushi. By the second day Sushi had ripped off the material, but it's her absolute favorite toy (she LOVES the way it rattles and never bores of it), so I wrapped it up in a sock and tied it closed. She hauls that thing everywhere. I'm not sure if it's only the safari kind that have the styrofoam, because the one Sushi has didn't have any styrofoam at all when she ripped off the material. You could clearly see through the pingpong style ball and the only thing inside it was the little bells/balls. I was actually planning on picking up a few more and just taking the material off and making a type of derby egg. I'll keep in mind to steer clear of the safari type though and thoroughly check them in case they have styrofoam like yours did. I REALLY hope your babies are okay and that it's just a passing scare. Your babies are in my thoughts. *fingers and paws crossed*

Are you pushing vaseline and pumpkin because if not you should be. You're little ones could be in trouble. You need to act, this isn't an observation thing, they could be in trouble. Thanks for the heads up though. Good luck ciao

Hope everything turns out ok! Cat toys in general are not made for ferrets, I have been giving mine the toys during supervised play on my bed so I can be sure they don't eat no no's!

The "ferret" toys that they make for ferrets are often just as terrible. I tend to give mine a combination of dog toys and cat toys as I usually find the safest options in those aisles.
Yes I am pushing pumpkin on everyone, and lax and pumpkin on the ones I think had the chance of ingesting the foam who are acting off. Stormy didn't really eat again this morning though he nibbled on some meat on the bone and ate some lax I gave him.
I've put him in his own cage for the day with a clean litterbox and food supply, if nothing has changed when I come home he'll be going to see the vet. I watched him go into the box and stand there for a while, and he may have pooped. Was hand to tell where he was standing. If he did it was very runny and mucousy.
Which,m if he didn't eat for the night would probably make sense? It would just be the lax coming through.

Well Stormy had 4 great poops today while we were gone, he ate some food and he has tons of energy to bounce around, so I'd say he is doing ok.

Glad to hear Stormy is out of the woods! Blockages are such a terrible scare.

Zar-zar seems to be doing alright though I haven't seen him poop since this morning as I did not separate him, his appetite has been great all day as well as his energy. He was zooming through tunnels, wrestling with other ferrets and bouncing around the room when he was let into play time. I think my kids were smart enough to not eat anything.
