Oh no, poor wee man. He's having a hard time of it. Just an idea- maybe switch he and Kenai? Let Koda have the bottom half with the box he prefers for now, and put Kenai up top? Might give him a bit of peace. With the pain meds, maybe just leave him without now. He'll be a bit more cautious about moving around so much.

Considering his propensity toward IBD and stress related GI problems could he have stressed himself that badly having a drug that tasted horrible? enough to vomit? He wouldn't be the first ferret to do this. I don't like using pain meds with ferrets (not that I won't, I just don't like to because they do have some of the most severe reactions...similar to cats and it can be stress related) I hope that you get it worked out for him. Is it possible to switch him with Kenai? He sounds like he would be happier that way ciao

I can't switch him with Kenai because the box he wants to use has normal litter in it (which I have nowhere to put) and he is on strictly newspaper litter for at least a few more days. Also, then Kenai will learn to poop on the top level of the FN and I'll have to re-potty train him that he HAS to climb down to use the litter box. It took me 2 years to get him to learn, I don't particularly want to start that over again... I can always move the feeding den to the top level though, that might help a little.
As for the meds, it could have been stress related Heather. He REALLY hated the taste. I'm afraid to give him another dose though in case it was more than that. The vet should be getting in in 30 min, and after she looks at his chart she's going to call me. I should be able to get more buprenorphine. I am hoping that they will maybe allow him to have some metacam though, he did well on that after his first surgery. I forgot to ask about that when I called earlier, so I'll talk to the vet when she calls...

I hope Koda doesn't need any pain medication anymore. I'll share a trick I use to give ferrets liquid gross-tasting meds in case it will help someone.
I take a capsule of flax seed oil and make a hole on one end with a toothpick. Then I put a ferret on my lap on his back with his body at 30 degrees to prevent aspiration. Then, I slowly squeeze the capsule so that ferret licks the oil off of the end and swallows. When ferret makes swallowing motion I squirt some med in the corner of his mouth positioning the tip of a syringe such that it is just at the edge of ferrets tongue. I repeat this process until the med is gone. If done right, ferrets do not notice the taste of a med at all. Instead, they excitedly lick the flax seed oil capsule.

Me too Sherry! Jellycat - we generally ask people NOT to post on threads this old unless it is relevant. This thread is over a year old. Instead just make a new thread with your medicating tricks next time. Thanks
