My 5 year old buddy, Trout, received a Melatonin implant yesterday. He has slept since the implant. I understand this is the norm and can last from 2 to 5 days. My concern is with his lack of eating (kibble) and fluid intake. He responds to me, but just curls back up and drifts right back to sleep. He did take a bit of water offered to him from my finger tips but has not eaten. My question is; do I need to be concerned with his lack of eating and drinking through this adjustment period? Thanks for any info.

Mine were groggy for a couple of days, but still ate and drank. I think I'd call the vets and talk to them.

I have no experience with your question, but I think it is amusing that your weasel's name is Trout Not a name you hear often, is also my daughter's goofy lab mix. Hope your Trout is back to his old self soon.

I've only heard of the one ferret so far. I'm sure that there might be more but I think it's very rare. Just to be on the safe side one should always follow up. Chaimel is right though these symptoms could be anesthetic side effects too if the ferret was put under for the implant (shouldn't have been but you never know)

Thanks SO much to all who helped with answers. Trout is doing quite fine and back to bounding about my home again. He is itching madly from the new hair growth and his overall disposition is better too. It must have just taken him a little longer to shake off the sleepiness from the implant. He did not get anesthesia. We took him in from a rescue home and he was not a young pup at that time. He had to have had at least a year on him by the time we took him home. We have had the joy of sharing our lives with him for a little over five years now. So he is not a young fellow, and like us humans, it takes a little longer to get back into the swing of things again after not feeling well Oh, about the name. His full name is Kilgore Trout - he is named after a character from a book my daughter likes! Again, thanks for your help

I'm so glad that he's doing fantastic and recovering nicely. Got to love the old timers. Give your sweet boy a big hug and tell him to relax and get better ciao
