Even though the yogurt is milk/ cream it is still safe? I know Kyra would LOVe yogurt... as she is always trying to steal a lick of my milk! ;D How much would you give? Can I buy a powder probiotic and then do some days of yogurt instead?

Can you get kefir? Acedophelus? You can use either of these instead of some artficial powdered stuff. It will have to be refridgerated but it works. ciao

Again- I don't use it as a preventative in a healthy ferret. Only after a course of antibiotics. And a couple of times where there was a bacterial overgrowth, and only for a week.On those occasions I used 1/2 tsp a day.

Just checked, bene bac does not have yeast or dried milk, thank goodness! Suzie, is this the one you use? there are a few different ones called bene bac www.probioticsmart.com/pets/bene-bac-plus-pet-powder.html?gclid=COj8gan60bECFSMCQAodAzcAYw This is the ingredient list: INGREDIENTS: Dextrose, maltodextrins, fructooligosaccharide, sodium silico aluminate, dried Bifidobacterium bifidum fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus fermentum fermentation product, dried L. acidophilus fermentation product, dried L. casei fermentation product, dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried L. plantarum fermentation product, dried Pediococcus acidilactici fermentation product Isnt the first ingredient sugar? (dextrose?) I dont know what all of those things are in that list, but the dextrose concerns me if this is going to be a daily thing.

Ok, so Sherry you would not suggest the yogurt as a long term use thing... would you use probiotics as a long term thing? (like a powder form) or would you also use those just short term?

I know I can get fortiflora through my vet... i read the ingredients and it seems nothing crazy added... maybe I should try that. My clinic allows you to buy the box of 30 packets or just a packet at a time. Perhaps I will just buy a couple packets to try it. Sherry, I remember you saying yours wouldnt touch this probiotic... do you know why?

The only one I used it for long term daily was Boris, and that was because of his IBD. I guess I'm just concerned with them getting used enough to something that their body may stop producing enough on it's own. Don't get me wrong- I don't know if that's even possible! But that's MY concern. However- I tend to be a bit paranoid diet wise

I completely understand what you mean Sherry. I really dont want to do this long term, Im just kinda hoping to try some more things to help with her prolapsing/ sore bum... OH! Bad update on that...... I went to put some sudocrem on Kyras bum tonight and she went and layed down right away and licked it off!! I tried distracting her, which worked for a very short while and then she would just curl up and I caught her licking again! Now, it's bad enough that shes licking the cream but when she licks her bum the lining sticks out (small prolapse) Oh Kyra! I Don't know why we have the luck!?

She licks the sudocream? ?? As for the probiotic, why not try some kefir like Heather suggested? Or give the Balkan yogurt a shot. 1/2 tsp a day. Can't recall right now, but she's getting daily pumpkin at the moment? If so, how much? And how much bone is she actually consuming? We thought Lucrezia was eating bone fine, then I realized she was actually eating around it, even with things like necks The solution for her has been a commercial raw a few times a week to increase what she was consuming.

That's why mine get commercial grinds as well as their whole meats. The sickies are less inclined to fight with their food (though eating around the bone seems just as difficult) and some like Minion are just too lazy. ciao

Yes Sherry... she was licking the sudocrem! She licked it all off, the little bugger! My ferrets do get commercial raw 3x a week. I often watch them eat their rmb and she is consuming bone. I think the only bones she doesn't always eat are chicken wings. I have cut back on wings and replaced a day with backs (which she does eat). I also see her eat quail, which she doesnt leave a crumb! I add pumpkin to their meals 4x a week (a little more than a tsp for all 3 of them). I was feeding Kyra pumpkin daily, about 1/2 tsp but I will admit that fell by the wayside when I didn't see improvement. I can go back to that though if you guys thing I should. She does like pumkpin. I will look for Kefir (never heard of it before this) but if I can't find it I will give the Balkan yogurt a shot. (astro yogurt has a plain balkan style that I think I have access to)

Link to the type I use and recommend..... www.amazon.com/PetAg-Bene-Bac%C2%AE-Pet-Powder-1lb/dp/B00061MROK I do not use the "plus" version. However, I do not believe the very small dosage of that sugar for short term use would have any ill effects. The dextrose base is likely to keep the organisms viable, and boost the growth of the organisms in the digestive tract. All the suggestions above are great...I just prefer the dry version because it stores well and I can use it when needed, that is just me. I have a lot of animals and this is what works for me. Also check into/ research digestive enzymes to help ease the digestive load.

I'm pretty happy I got some Balkan plain yogurt for Kyra today and offered her 1/2 tsp. She ate it quite happily! Made a litte face at first but then lapped it up! Fingers crossed this will help. I will try it daily for a week. Her bum did look pretty good today... but that seems to be the trend... it looks almost perfect then back to square one. Fingers crossed

I will try the yogurt(because I have access to yogurt right away, and will probably need to order the benebac if I get it) but I will definitely keep that in mind! Thanks for the help
