Hey all!
So, I'm looking towards getting a privately bred ferret for my next weasel. I understand kits won't really be available until next spring... and I'm okay with that, I just lost my last ferret and that will give me plenty of time to be really ready for my next.
But... it doesn't hurt to start dreaming/looking early!
I've got over 10 years personal experience with ferrets, as well as being raised with them when I was very young. My parents bred them(because they had to, at the time there were no vets in the area willing to spay/neuter a ferret) ages ago. So I have a wealth of knowledge at my beck and call. ... Yes, I do know private ferrets are a different creature from our dear farm ferrets.
I will always have 'farm ferret' rescues, too many of these need homes. However, I really want a ferret I can get a little more mileage out of! I'm really looking for HEALTH - Temperament, then confirmation/body.
I'm not really looking to show the ferret or breed, I couldn't take the heartache and expense! However I may like to show as a companion, down the road so I would like the option to be open for that.
I'm leaning towards a girl, I will have her spayed as soon as it's in her best health interests to do so. I am drawn to dark sables, my favorite sable is one with a very defined mask that contrasts sharply over the white muzzle(oh, I love these so!).
I see that 'Black Ferrets' are currently all the rage, and they are drop-dead-gorgeous... though I'm curious as to possible health issues related... and I see this term tossed about but I'm not sure what it means.... What is a 'self' ?
I'm from DE, so I'm on the east coast... I'll be hitting a ferret show on the 22nd of Sept. From my days of volunteering at a ferret shelter in VA I attended a show before and was introduced to a Shady Hollow Ferret. He was a doll, but again super-black. I'm interested in this breeder as she's been breeding since the early 80's.... but I'm curious if any one here has any experience with her ferrets. Especially health-wise(If it's anything too negative, please just Private Message me).
ANY thoughts and info is appreciated. Even on other breeders in my area.
