I want to convert my two ferrets Winston and Chloe to eat whole prey. Where do i even start? What are some steps i can take to transition them?I tried feeding raw a couple of months ago but it was too complicated and costly, and they didn't really eat it and there cage is in my room and i didn't feel comfortable with the raw meat being in there for hours, i read somewhere that it was ok to keep raw things in a bowl for ferrets for a couple of hours, but they hardly ate any of it, they only wanted kibble. I am thinking if they don't even like raw, they wont even go near a whole mouse. lol. My last question is that i want to raise mice for them myself and i was wondering about how many breeder mice would i need to have a continuous supply of mice for the guys? Chloe is pretty small, shes 5 months old and winston is 6 months and pretty small for a male, right now they eat about 1/3 of a cup of kibble each a day. Thank you

I can't answer to raising whole prey, but mine will eat 1-2 mice per meal. Also- I couldn't get them touching it until they'd been on raw for a while. The problem you are having right now is they simply don't recognize meat as food. Most of us start them with a puree soup first, work at getting them to accept that, and then work your way up to slivers, chunks, and finally bone in meats.

It is very difficult to get ferrets to just eat prey without them eating raw first. You have to teach them, their mommas aren't there to teach them. There is no easy way to teach ferrets to recognise raw or natural foods. They only know kibbles. You can give them meat or mice for that matter and they're not going to eat them, they have to be taught and that's going to take time...your time. Five and six months, those are babies and they're going to tuck the food away if they get the chance. My guys eat commercial grinds, frankenprey and full prey (rabbit, mice, rats, quail and chicks) Each and everyone of them had to be taught what that food was. ciao
