so i'm gathering the items i need to join the mentor program and i had a question about the eggshell - i can't remember but i thought i had read a post a while back that talked about bonemeal and how it could maybe be used as a replacement for eggshell??? am i crazy, was i reading the wrong thing, or am i having a bad memory attack again (i have lots of those, my memory is HORRIBLE). anywho, i ask because bonemeal is easy to obtain and i don't really eat many eggs (as i'm vegetarian and try to avoid as many animal products as i can), but if i can't trade in bonemeal for eggshell i have no problem buying more eggs for my boys just thought i'd ask. thanx! oh, and while i'm on questions about the raw switch - i'm fairly sure one of my boys has an allergy to chicken so i would like to avoid that particular protein (in fact all fowl) for a while as he has been doing rather well health-wise recently and i don't want to chance any fallbacks. that being said, what would be a good starter protein that wouldn't be too difficult to locate (as i have 4 boys and imagine i will need to obtain a fair amount of said protein rather readily)? again, thanx!

Bone meal is indeed another option for a home supplement
If you're trying to avoid fowl, pork might be an easy to find starter protein. Beef can be used but it's more strongly flavored.

would pork organs work like fowl organs or am i going to have to use things like chicken hearts/livers/etc. - and in turn would other protein organs (like beef) work the same way or would i again have to revert to fowl? (seems like it might be a bit difficult to obtain a pork/beef heart - or at the very least i'm gonna get a really strange look from all of the local butchers )

Pork organs would work fine, but my concern would be where you get consumable bone. Most here use fowl bones to feed. Are you sure he's allergic to all fowl?

no, i'm not positive he's allergic to all fowl but this is the situation (very much shortened) - Bandit is my sick baby (who has many a thread on here about his many issues) that has been switched around onto 5 different foods in the past year because of his many issues (not sure if its IBD, cardio, lymphoma, etc.) to try to elliminate each possible problem. we still haven't determined what his issue is, but for a while (several months) he had gotten REALLY sick and it appears that getting him onto single protein kibbles other than fowl has helped him immensly (venison and rabbit in particular have been good for him). that coupled with the fact that on 2 seperate occassions during his food switches we allowed him 1 single treat (that was made up mostly of chicken) and he again got REALLY sick, but only after he received the treats. i know this doesn't imply that he is allergic to all fowl, i was just being precautious because there was a time or two in there that we might have lost him and i'm just so scared to take a chance with him again, at least until we have him yet again switched onto another diet regimen (because those switches have been hard on him too and we have only recently in the whole past year gotten him to a place where he is able to actually run around a bit with his brothers and play instead of constantly laying around and coughing all day)

Bone is going to be the problem. One way to get around that, besides bonemeal(get raw if at all possible- most butcher's have it available as a byproduct of cutting bone) would be to go with commercial raw for 8 meals a week. Otherwise, your protein sources could be beef, pork, lamb, goat, bison, elk, venison just to name a few.

Most animals, even if allergic to procecced (cooked) protiens, will not be allergic to the same protien in raw form. Just throwing that out there.

thanx guys for your help! i'm going to visit a few butchers today to see what they offer and what they can do for me with my 'special requests' and i have found one pet store that sells some commercial raw. they don't have a ton of options but they are the only ones anywhere near me in that actually offers such foods. i will try to make a trip to them asap to see again what they have (they are about 45min away from me). they also offer a full selection of RRs and Bach remedies

RANT!!!
so over the past couple of days i've been racing to gather all of the things i need to get into the mentor program and now i'm down to gettin my pics downloaded (which shouldn't take too long) and my meats. i went and bought a scale yesterday for the food (it was cheap and a little too small for the ferts), i bought another scale online last night at 3am for weighin the ferts, and i also bought a mortar and pestle, a cleaver, ice cube trays, plastic baggies, and bonemeal. after all this was said and done, i visited Whole Foods to see what organic meats I could get and saw that they had plenty of beef and pork to choose from (i'm not getting chicken right now), and a little venison, and they even had beef liver on-hand (though it was crazy expensive). however, they had no hearts, so i decided to visit a couple of local butcher shops i had found instead. by the time i made it there one had already closed, and the other, well, the meat looked horrendous and everything was in spanish so i couldn't read what anything was! needless to say i am now annoyed! i wanted to have everything ready and done by tonight, but now i'm probably going to have to wait until next week (as my workweek starts tomorrow). on a good note though, the butcher at Whole Foods said he could probably order me beef/pork organs if I wanted, but it will still take some time. in the interim, i'm gonna try and locate some more local butchers (not as easy a task as one might think).
anywho - so another question about the raw stuff and the mentor program --- so if i'm getting something like beef or venison for my initial soupy should i get simple ground meat or do i need a specific type of cut, or a whole chunk of meat?

Ground will work fine for the beginning stages since you have to puree it anyway.

Are there no "ethnic" meat markets near you? I don't know what I'd do without the Hispanic/Latino market I found. They have everything there. The one thing I don't like about it is that it's a small building and always extremely crowded but I do what I gotta do. /shrug
