This follows the theory presented years ago by Dr. Johnson-Delaney with lupron. This works great as long as you get the implant early enough to suppress the initial hormone surge. Timingg can be tricky since some ferrets that are born late in the year may come into season in early spring (time of year may be more important than age). The other thing that could happen is not re- implanting soon enough (Deslorelin shortages happen - I could not re-implant soon enough to fully protect my girls' remaining single gland.

Also, I'll be at the IFC symposium in a couple of weeks - hope to learn more about the vaccine. I have to admit that I don't like messing with the immune system - this vaccine is a true vaccination that elicits and immune response.....ferret immune systems seem fragile at times....I think I'll pass on letting any of my kids be test subjects with vaccines.
Until the vaccine is proven.... my plan for dealing with any future ferrets is to get in tact ferrets, allow them to reach puberty, and then start the deslorelin implants. Any breakthroughs would not disturb the adrenals. keeping an animal from reaching puberty seems unnatural. For early alters, I'd do the pre-puberty implants.

What would you suggest for a ferret that is passed puberty (early spay)?
I'm trying to decide what to do for Pixie (2 yr) and Trixie (1.5 yr). Dixie (5 months) will be implanted hopefully soon. Should I implant the others as well? I'd prefer to stagger the implants so I can spread the costs out.

I would implant all of them. It may be CHEAPER to implant all at once. This will depend on your vet and how he handles the Des.
I give my vet my credit card and I buy the implants outright, pay the shipping, etc. implants are priced by volume - I believe the first price break is 10 or 11 implants? (They don't last forever)
The shipping is 80.00 (at least it has been the 2 times I have ordered them)
So, unless you vet does a lot of implants, you may want to save up some money and get them all at once. Som vets give volume discounts on service as well - let alone (4 brats with one appointment for implants is also cheaper for me than 4 individual appointments...another form of "volume discount")
You need to discuss this with your vet rather than just doing one ferret at a time.

Jackie I asked Dr. Murray (Jerry) when to implant and he said "as soon as possible don't wait" my vet waited until Sonny was 5 months though. Even if your fetrets are past puberty, I would implant your ferrets as soon as possible. If some are not Adrenal yet then now is the time to do it! Mustelidmusk, I would do the same thing (intact and just use deslorelin) but how can I get an intact ferret??? I don't believe that these animals should be neutered/spayed.

The "light" thing is quite interesting. So it wouldn't be a bad idea to move the ferrets' room to the basement (like we are planning to, but not for light reasons)? And just have the lights on during the natural light cycle?

The problem is they also need exposure to natural sunlight. If you could manage to get them outside even 10 minutes a day, it would help.

Can you use uv bulbs like for lizards instead? You'd have the problem of putting them close enough without the ferrets getting to them though.

I would assume full spectrum lighting during daylight hours would make a difference.

Very interesting thread!
Keeping them out doors would also be a solution, yes?

If weather permits, yes. Where I am, we can easily go down to minus 40 celsius in the winter, so far too cold. And up to 35 to 40 in the summer.

So I did check through a few pages, but does anyone know when we will see results of the adrenal vaccine testing? Do we know when they hope to bring it to market?
Also I'm glad I know about the lighting, at my parent's house every room has huge windows and skylights, so we have tons of natural light even into the evening. BUT, in my apartment at university I have fluorescence bulbs that came with my room, so I need to change that before I move Rolo in :/
