People can get botfly's as well. If you can stomach it, do a YouTube search.

I have let my little Miss Zero outside a few times so far. I am lucky to live in such a place that the only bugs I really gotta worry about are flies (normal ones), bees, and some spiders. Fleas don't really exists around here luckily. I mean my dog is going on 6 years old and I have never once had to treat her for fleas, no sort of treatment at all. So I guess I am fairly lucky. I know of bot flies but only what I have seen on tv, never had the...pleasure of dealing with them personally.

I let my guys out at least once a day (when I feed the dog usually). I, like billseeds believe that sunlight is a must (people suffer from illnesses when they don't get enough sun as it triggers our bodies to produce certain chemicals). I don't know what the sun does but I do think it helps their health having accdess to actual sunlight on their skin and being so light sensitive (ask Heather about her hobs and light) I think it does more than we realise. I'm hoping the access to the outdoors helps stave off things like possible adrenal (the only ferret I have had that got adrenal was when I got paranoid about them going out after Slubber got lost and so they were never allowed out). Of my current crew, the oldest was here when they weren't allowed out but all the others have had regular outdoor times the whole time I have had them. I agree that there are risks outdoors (in some areas the risks are higher than others) but I think keeping them in also has risks too, JMO

I do have a screened in porch that if I can get the screening fixed they can at least get supervised time out there. That is as far as I am willing to go though, my area is just too dangerously populated with yucky bugs!

I love taking Sanuk outside, but I think after reading this he will be in a pet stroller when we go outside.

My guys have had their own outdoor play area for over 10 yrs and I've only had to deal with this issue once. That particular year there was an abundance of ground hogs and rabbits very close to their play area, seemingly these bot flies like their burrows. It's obviously always up to you and the risks that you're willing to take. I usually look at is as how much benefit do they get vs the risk. My guys reap such a great benefit from their outdoor excursions that I've chosen not to curtail their outdoor play. I always check them over closely and they're into the vet if there are any open wounds or sores or anything that might be construed as a medical problem. ciao

Never thought I would be so glad to live in Las Vegas ( especially the hot, hot summers! ), but after seeing and reading about bot fly larvae and I am thrilled that we do not have to worry about fleas and bot flies ! Shudder...
