I added my e-mail to the first message. I'm also asking around at work and my boss has a friend with three ferrets so I'm hoping she'll take them. They'll come with: Ferret Nation 2 Bedding set by LFFB Rubbermaid litter box Two 25 pound bags of pine pelleted litter Zupreem ferret food (my mother would never let me switch them to raw) Toys, food and water dishes, shampoo, harnesses and leashes (they love walks), and other things Two Marshall playpens. Altogether it's 16 square feet of space. Pet steps so they can get in and out of their cage Litter deodorizer Ferrets for Dummies 2nd edition Some ferret magazines I'm not even looking to get any money out of this as long as they go to a great home. Taking them to a nearby ferret shelter will be a last resort because I'd like to know who my boys go to. Heck, if possible, I'd like to see if I could get them back whenever I move out, which I hope will be as soon as I can find someone suitable for a roommate. So if anyone with ferrets in Atlanta needs a roomie, tell them to find me.

Hailey- you need to remove your email from the public post and message it to me instead. Anyone at all can read it, member or not.

Well after a long talk, my mother and I have come to an agreement that I can keep my boys. I just have to keep the smell down and not allow them to dig at carpet in whatever house we decide to rent. I'm going to get a hooded litterbox next payday and I hope that will help contain the smell of ferret poopies.
Thank you so much everyone for coming to their aid. You are all really great folks with a deep love for both your own and other fuzzies.

So glad it has worked out. These sorts of things can create rifts in a family that are hard to heal.

I've been following this thread and I'm so happy you and your mom came to a compromise. Do you have a plan for protecting the carpet? Mine only digs at doors, so I got some cheap carpet made for outdoors and cut it to fit the doorways.

I'm so happy for you Have you thought of an air cleaner/purifier? A friend of mine use to use a portable air conditioner and that really cut the smell from the ferret room, just a thought. Here's an article to read about ozone air cleaners if you decide to look into air cleaners. www.hc-sc.gc.ca/cps-spc/pubs/cons/ozone-eng.php

I was worrie but I'm happy you could keep them. If I lived closer then I would have. Anyways you could try giving them some raw when your mom isn't around. When I was slowly switching it cut down on smell. I couldn't even smell their poop.

That is so fantastic. I'm so happy for you. Keeping clean litter boxes and changing their bedding weekly goes a long way to keeping the smell down. ciao

Ferretholic - The sad thing is I'm not even their first mommy. Boogie was bought on Craigslist and I'm his second home. Bear was in a tiny horribly-run pet store and was returned for some non-existent aggression issue. And Loki was dumped off at a Petsmart and I'm at least his third home. But I definitely want to be their last home. Houseofallergies - Well my mother and I have our moments but we're all kind of cramped and stressed in this apartment. We're looking at rental houses that will give me an upstairs loft or something to myself which I think will cut down on any smell from the boys and any complaining she has about my cleanliness. I'm the first to admit I'm not tidy and she's very anal about it. How she raised me, I don't know. Rachellori - Well what I've done now is put down some cheap vinyl flooring in my room like a rug and I keep their playpen on the vinyl. Easy to clean, though not too stylish I'm afraid. There are some poop stains on the carpet in the corners that I'm going to have to scrub really hard. Darlene - I actually haven't thought of an air purifier! But that'd be a great idea since I have pretty bad allergies, too. I wonder if I could find one online for pretty cheap. Sherry - Thank you so much for helping me out and I'm glad it wasn't needed. Jackie - That was what my boss suggested, too! I used to use some baking soda cat litter stuff but ran out and then my dad bought the wrong kind that doesn't work as well. But plain baking soda is probably a lot cheaper.... Crabbyoreo - I'm going to try again to switch them to raw and hopefully sign up for the mentor program in the coming months. Kelybely - Yes, the boys were very glad to hear the news! So glad that they all tried to jump out of the cage and I had to juggle them to keep them from hitting the floor. Heather - Washing the bedding is something I've been slacking on. I'm going to buy a new set so I can switch it out so it'll be even easier to do. Another thing I'm going to do is write down a daily to-do list and follow it. It really helps keep me on track at work (pet care associate at Petsmart) and will make things easy to remember when I'm busy or stressed or when I go back to school.

One thing to consider (joys of running a shelter), my guys sleep on blankets, sheets and towels that were donated, given, posted on various give away sites, craigslist, family, yard sales. A friend made cubes and hammies that I bought and I've also bought a couple of sets recently. Mostly my guys make do with hand me downs. They work just great and you'd be surprised what people sometimes just throw away. This allows me to change up much more frequently. My UK kids are intact, so the boys are sort of smelly, they get daily bed changes. I couldn't keep up with them if I had to use just "sets" but using these sheets and old towels they get bedding changes all the time. You also cannot leave the bedding laying around, they have to be cleaned immediately. This too will keep the smell down. ciao
