I have been making prize toys to donate to our ferret club for some of the games/fund raising we do for our local fert shelter. A favorite is always the crocheted eggs - but I don't have time..... These "cheater" crocheted eggs are simple, and ferrets love them too. 1. Easter eggs of desired size - get the strong ones - my brats can even puncture the strong ones 2. pebbles or anthing to make a rattle noise inside the egg that will be safe if the ferret rips open the egg (pebbles that are too big to swallow, rice (too small to be a serious problem id swallowed, etc. 3. tape that is not likely to be eaten (thin packaging tape or scotch tape - nothing thick/rubbery like duct tape, strapping tape, masking tape, etc) 4. Baby/children's socks big enough to put the egg in and tie a knot on the open end behind the egg. I buy stronger sock and/or double them (2 socks for 1 egg for the chewers) * Put the "rattle material" (different types make different sounds) in the egg. * Tape the egg seam all the way around * Put the egg inside a sock (or 2 socks doubled for rough ferrets/chewers). * Tie a knot in the sock behind the egg. * Now go play with your ferret! -jennifer

My guys love the cheater eggs (I'm terrible I don't crochet or knit)...they also have "tags" that allow the ferret to really get a hold on the egg. I'm just trying to find the "right" content ciao

My guys love the Derby eggs....they've all been squished flat though by small furry hooligans who do not play gently with their toys ciao

The Derby eggs are filled with macaroni. I think that's what makes them so loved- that and the fact Karen has only ever used a specific type of yarn ;D

I used to purchased the crochet eggs for my kids. They would just destory them in two days. Then they would move on to mom's homemade afghan blankets. Not cool with mom.
I started making these egg socks for my kids. They love them. Plus if the sock gets dirty...you can throw them into wash.
Another option would be: using polar fleece material. Wrap the egg in the polar fleece material and then tie top.

If you have any emptied pill bottles or vitamin bottles that will fit into the sock. That will work to.

Oh! wow, what a great idea. THANKS!!! One of my ferts goes crazy for the balls with the bell in them. I am going to try this and see if I get the same response. If so this will allow her to get a hold of these and really sink her teeth into them.
