[1/6/2012 12:52:45 AM] Yossarian: Questions though.
[1/6/2012 12:52:52 AM] Yossarian: I don't think he's getting enough calcuim.
[1/6/2012 12:53:56 AM] Yossarian: What can I do about that?
[1/6/2012 12:53:56 AM] Katt: okay
[1/6/2012 12:54:04 AM] Katt: well first of all, what makes oyu think that
[1/6/2012 12:54:12 AM] Katt: and what is your current "menu" or feeding routine
[1/6/2012 12:54:23 AM] Katt: like how much bone he gets and when and what kinds
[1/6/2012 12:55:00 AM] Yossarian: He's not getting enough bone.
[1/6/2012 12:55:13 AM] Yossarian: he doesn't like then when it's prime eating time.
[1/6/2012 12:55:27 AM] Yossarian: He's getting it from chicken and he likes to stash chicken and wait until it "ready".
[1/6/2012 12:56:01 AM] Yossarian: By then he can't eat the bone.
[1/6/2012 12:56:12 AM] Katt: is the bone dry
[1/6/2012 12:56:16 AM] Yossarian: Yeah.
[1/6/2012 12:56:20 AM] Katt: as long as there is meat encasing it it will be okay for a while
[1/6/2012 12:56:27 AM] Katt: how long does it take to become "ready"
[1/6/2012 12:56:49 AM] Yossarian: Umm...
[1/6/2012 12:57:19 AM] Yossarian: A day and a half if he stashed it well.
[1/6/2012 12:58:27 AM] Yossarian: Just like I was telling you he won't eat chicken right away... he likes it a bit dried before he'll touch it.
[1/6/2012 1:00:13 AM] Katt: a day and a half should be okay
[1/6/2012 1:00:31 AM] Katt: as long as the bone is covered by meat still when it's stashed
[1/6/2012 1:00:41 AM] Katt: where do you feed him?
[1/6/2012 1:00:48 AM] Katt: My boys don't get to stash food.
[1/6/2012 1:01:10 AM] Katt: they still hide some when I'm not being thorough, but I try to only give them enough for a meal with a little left over
[1/6/2012 1:01:26 AM] Katt: then at the next meal if it's not all gone I only add a little more to top off the leftovers
[1/6/2012 1:01:27 AM] Yossarian: In his cage.
[1/6/2012 1:01:35 AM] Yossarian: He doesn't each anywhere else.
[1/6/2012 1:01:47 AM] Katt: okay good, so easier to control where the food is going lol
[1/6/2012 1:01:49 AM] Yossarian: He only stashes certain pieces and never outside of his cage.
[1/6/2012 1:01:57 AM] Katt: perfect, so you know where to check
[1/6/2012 1:02:18 AM] Katt: try taking the old meat out with each new meal so that he simply cannot wait a day and a half
[1/6/2012 1:04:13 AM] Yossarian: Well...
[1/6/2012 1:04:25 AM] Yossarian: If it's chicken, he just won't eat it.
[1/6/2012 1:04:43 AM] Yossarian: And with his insulinoma I kind of worry about that.
[1/6/2012 1:05:38 AM] Katt: grrr
[1/6/2012 1:05:40 AM] Katt: little brat
[1/6/2012 1:05:41 AM] Katt: lol
[1/6/2012 1:05:43 AM] Yossarian: I know, right?
[1/6/2012 1:05:47 AM] Katt: well he really needs the bones for his teeth
[1/6/2012 1:05:48 AM] Yossarian: He's so spoiled.
[1/6/2012 1:05:52 AM] Katt: are you still breaking them up?
[1/6/2012 1:05:53 AM] Katt: he is
[1/6/2012 1:05:58 AM] Yossarian: Yeah.
[1/6/2012 1:06:03 AM] Katt: you can definitely supplement, you'll have to
[1/6/2012 1:06:07 AM] Katt: but don't give up on the bone
[1/6/2012 1:06:12 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:06:18 AM] Katt: what are his poops looking like?
[1/6/2012 1:06:23 AM] Yossarian: Can I just get regular store sups?
[1/6/2012 1:06:27 AM] Katt: I'll find some supplement amount for you
[1/6/2012 1:06:54 AM] Yossarian: It looks runny.
[1/6/2012 1:07:01 AM] Yossarian: It hasn't firmed up at all.
[1/6/2012 1:07:03 AM] Katt: oh there's a few things you can do. Either bone meal, powdered egg shell, powder your own egg shell, or calcium powder
[1/6/2012 1:07:10 AM] Katt: yeah he needs more calcium for sure
[1/6/2012 1:07:25 AM] Katt: let me look for something for oyu
[1/6/2012 1:07:40 AM] Katt: I think it's 1/4 tsp but I forget how often you give it
[1/6/2012 1:07:42 AM] Yossarian: I wonder if I mix the egg shell in his actual egg... if he'll eat it.
[1/6/2012 1:07:53 AM] Katt: you can jsut give him a whole egg
[1/6/2012 1:07:58 AM] Katt: makes a great toy and treat
[1/6/2012 1:08:02 AM] Yossarian: ...
[1/6/2012 1:08:07 AM] Yossarian: I really don't want to have to clean that up lol
[1/6/2012 1:08:10 AM] Katt: he has to figure out how to get it open
[1/6/2012 1:08:10 AM] Katt:
[1/6/2012 1:08:15 AM] Katt:
[1/6/2012 1:08:20 AM] Yossarian: And this isn't a normal ferret we're talking about here.
[1/6/2012 1:08:20 AM] Katt: in the bathub?
[1/6/2012 1:08:23 AM] Yossarian: This is Blake...
[1/6/2012 1:08:30 AM] Katt: (facepalm) true
[1/6/2012 1:08:46 AM] Katt: anyways, yes you can give him the raw fresh egg shell
[1/6/2012 1:08:56 AM] Katt: once it's dried though I think it has to be powdered pretty well
[1/6/2012 1:08:57 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:09:01 AM] Katt: so fresh only for now
[1/6/2012 1:09:13 AM] Katt: and egg shouldn't be given too often
[1/6/2012 1:09:17 AM] Katt: it gives them the runs
[1/6/2012 1:09:23 AM] Katt: but egg is VERY healthy
[1/6/2012 1:09:34 AM] Yossarian: Yeah... i know about the poop already lol
[1/6/2012 1:09:35 AM] Katt: so it can be given pretty regularly, jsut not daily
[1/6/2012 1:09:36 AM] Katt:
[1/6/2012 1:09:41 AM] Yossarian: He's none too pleased with that surprise.
[1/6/2012 1:09:44 AM] Katt:
[1/6/2012 1:09:56 AM] Yossarian: The litter box hasn't been happy either.
[1/6/2012 1:10:02 AM] Katt: Maybe try mixing his meats into some eggs?
[1/6/2012 1:10:09 AM] Katt: and shells broken into the hwole much
[1/6/2012 1:10:22 AM] Katt: maybe he'll be more inclined to eat the meat and bones freh if they are eggy
[1/6/2012 1:10:29 AM] Katt: anyways I'm going to look for something
[1/6/2012 1:10:34 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:19:26 AM] Katt: Okay I should have an answer by tomorrow
[1/6/2012 1:19:30 AM] Katt: Okay so I don't supplement my guys with calcium so I need help on amounts. Yossarian's little Blake won't eat bones. He's an oldie and insulinomic and has had soft poops far too long for my liking. How much and how often would you supplement for each of the following:
powdered egg shell
bone meal
calcium powder (reptile supplement, pure calcium with no phosphorus or D3)
crushed calcium pills (human)?
I want to give him a few options for things to try. Thanks guys!
[1/6/2012 1:19:33 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:19:38 AM] Katt: I posted this in the mod board
[1/6/2012 1:19:55 AM] Katt: Sherry and Heahter will give the amounts soon, they are usually qucik to respond
[1/6/2012 1:20:07 AM] Yossarian: Alright
[1/6/2012 1:21:01 AM] Katt: is there any one of those that you knwo you can get your hands on?
[1/6/2012 1:21:37 AM] Yossarian: Can I get the calcium powder from petco?
[1/6/2012 1:22:43 AM] Katt: um
[1/6/2012 1:22:47 AM] Katt: perhaps
[1/6/2012 1:22:56 AM] Katt: I can show you a better place to get it though
[1/6/2012 1:23:03 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:23:41 AM] Katt: www.reptileuv.com/rep-cal-calcium-phosphorous-free-no-d3.php
[1/6/2012 1:24:03 AM] Yossarian: I don't want to order it offline.
[1/6/2012 1:24:14 AM] Katt: it's cheap and a good sized bottle. High wuality. I use it for my iguana and would not consider using anyhting else personally
[1/6/2012 1:24:15 AM] Katt: ah okay
[1/6/2012 1:24:21 AM] Katt: well look at Pet Co and see what you find
[1/6/2012 1:24:34 AM] Katt: the key things are it HAS to be NO phospohorus and NO D3
[1/6/2012 1:24:39 AM] Katt: pure calcium only
[1/6/2012 1:24:55 AM] Yossarian: Alright.
[1/6/2012 1:26:31 AM] Katt: interesting...
[1/6/2012 1:26:32 AM] Katt: www.petco.com/product/117303/Flukers-Liquid-Calcium-Supplement-for-All-Reptiles.aspx
[1/6/2012 1:26:36 AM] Yossarian: ...
[1/6/2012 1:26:39 AM] Katt: I wonder how good this is? I don't trust it
[1/6/2012 1:26:47 AM] Katt: they'd have to mix it with other stuff to make it liquid
[1/6/2012 1:26:50 AM] Yossarian: Well if you don't....
[1/6/2012 1:26:54 AM] Katt: but still interesting
[1/6/2012 1:26:57 AM] Katt: I'm intrigued
[1/6/2012 1:27:09 AM] Katt: yeah, no I def don't trust it but still curiou
[1/6/2012 1:27:12 AM] Katt: cuirous
[1/6/2012 1:28:05 AM] Yossarian: lol
[1/6/2012 1:28:12 AM] Yossarian: Just can't spell today can ya?
[1/6/2012 1:29:59 AM] Katt: no
[1/6/2012 1:30:54 AM] Yossarian: It's alright.
[1/6/2012 1:31:00 AM] Yossarian: I won't judge you.
[1/6/2012 1:31:07 AM] Katt: www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Labs-Repti-Calcium/dp/B002GCFEBK
[1/6/2012 1:31:19 AM] Katt: not sure if pet co carreis this
[1/6/2012 1:31:26 AM] Katt: it's zoo med brand
[1/7/2012 12:07:47 AM] Katt: Sherry: Powdered eggshell: 1/2 tsp for every 8 oz of meat
Bonemeal(raw, not cooked. And human grade only) same amount.
To be honest, I'm not sure about the other two, but was just reading through the "vitamin" thread in health resources, and it mentions that it's benificial to take vit. D along with the calcium supplement.
holisticferret60.proboards.com/in....ead=5111&page=1
Actually, Bev is the one who wrote up the item on vitamins, so why not message her(crazy lady)?

[1/7/2012 12:07:57 AM] Katt: Heather: I don't think she measures When you've done it as long as she has, measuring is a pain that you don't normally think about I know she mentioned one time about using cuttle bone (is that what they call it, a supplement for birds) You just grind it up to a fine powder. I was using a calcium supplement for Yuri. It's actually bone meal powder. It says to use 1 tsp daily for children over 1 yr. I've been using 1/4 to 1/2 tsp added to soupy I just adjusted it as needed.
ciao

[10:37:34 PM] Yossarian: I can't read more silly.
[10:37:49 PM] Yossarian: But I did get your message from Mikey.
[10:37:54 PM] Katt: I know, it automatically adds that when you copy/paste
[10:37:57 PM] Katt: cool
[10:42:47 PM] Katt: does that help?
[10:43:03 PM] Katt: grocery stores should carry bone meal or powdered egg shell I believe
[10:43:07 PM] Katt: at least bone meal
[10:43:37 PM] Yossarian: They carry neither, which was my problem in the first place, makes me want to bang my head into the wall.
[10:43:47 PM] Yossarian: A Vitamin shope might have it.
[10:45:23 PM] Katt: grrr
[10:45:28 PM] Katt: yeah that's a good call
[10:45:39 PM] Katt: or some form of calcium powder
[10:45:44 PM] Yossarian: yeah.
[10:45:48 PM] Katt: you can make your own powdered egg shell too
[10:45:51 PM] Yossarian: I'll check it out tomorrow.
[10:46:01 PM] Yossarian: I tried. He eats around it.
[10:46:10 PM] Katt: if all else fails, cuttelbones are very inexpensive
[10:46:53 PM] Katt: get a bowl and put the meat in it, and sprinkle the powder over it. Mixt it up really well. The juices will help absorb/dissolve the calcium so that the meat is coated in it and he can't eat around it
[10:47:51 PM] Yossarian: Noted.
[10:49:03 PM] Katt: let me know how it goes, and how the hunt goes
[10:49:19 PM] Katt: also for the measurements, keep in mind those are baselines
[10:49:25 PM] Katt: each ferret is a little different.
[10:49:27 PM] Yossarian: Will do.
[10:49:46 PM] Katt: start with maybe 1/4 tsp and see how he does. If his poops look good, he's probably good at 1/4 tsp
[10:49:55 PM] Katt: if they are still soft, add a little more
[10:50:02 PM] Yossarian: Alright.
[10:50:04 PM] Katt: I forget - what are your feelings on whole prey?
[10:50:33 PM] Yossarian: Should I start seeing results immediately?
[10:50:35 PM] Yossarian: Umm...
[10:50:47 PM] Yossarian: The vegetarian in me screams not a chance...
[10:50:48 PM] Yossarian: but.
[10:51:03 PM] Yossarian: Once I can get him to eat bones I'll consider it.
[10:52:15 PM] Katt: how does he do with cornish game hen bones
[10:52:16 PM] Katt: ?
[10:52:36 PM] Yossarian: He does better than chicken.
[10:54:18 PM] Katt: okay, well let's perhaps try to make that his main diet instead of chicken if that' possible?
[10:55:11 PM] Yossarian: Ummm...
[10:55:35 PM] Yossarian: Let me get back to you on that one.
[10:55:51 PM] Katt: ok, no problem
[10:55:59 PM] Katt: I know they are a bit more expensive than chicken (worry) so yeah
[10:56:08 PM] Katt: what's his current list of meats he will eat?
[10:58:05 PM] Yossarian: Yeah umm...
[10:59:44 PM] Katt: |-(
[11:00:32 PM] Yossarian: He eats, cornish hen, chicken wings, chicken legs, chicken breasts, pork loin, turkey wing tips, and beef... but he's not a fan of it.
[11:00:36 PM] Yossarian: Don't be impatient lol
[11:01:05 PM] Yossarian: He also eats, chicken heart, chicken liver, beef kidney, and beef heart.
[11:05:01 PM] Katt: (y)
[11:05:04 PM] Katt: good!
[11:05:09 PM] Katt: that's not a bad list at all!
[11:05:22 PM] Katt: [10:58 PM] Yossarian:
<<< Yeah umm...this had me concerned!
[11:05:29 PM] Yossarian: lol
[11:05:38 PM] Yossarian: I just wanted to make sure I got everything.
[11:05:42 PM] Katt: you have 2 sources of heart, 2 organs including liver, and more than 3 protein sources
[11:05:45 PM] Yossarian: He also eats gizzards.
[11:05:59 PM] Katt: good boy!
[11:06:07 PM] Katt: See, he is doing great!
[11:06:09 PM] Yossarian: >.>
[11:06:12 PM] Yossarian: What about me?
[11:06:13 PM] Yossarian: lol
[11:06:20 PM] Katt: haha of course you are
[11:06:27 PM] Yossarian: ^_^
[11:06:27 PM] Katt: you are the one who got him to this point!
[11:06:33 PM] Katt: *pats on back*
[11:06:33 PM] Katt:
[11:06:40 PM] Yossarian: Yes!
[11:06:45 PM] Yossarian: Alright so that menu...
[11:06:48 PM] Yossarian: totally working on it.
[11:06:55 PM] Katt: Good!
[11:06:57 PM] Katt: *psh*
[11:07:00 PM] Katt: Finally
[11:07:05 PM] Katt: *coughcough* SLACKER *ahem*
[11:07:06 PM] Yossarian: Does chicken heart have more good stuff than beef?
[11:07:14 PM] Yossarian: He likes beef heart more.
[11:07:20 PM] Katt: did oyu hear something.... :^)
[11:07:23 PM] Katt:
[11:07:28 PM] Katt: no heart is heart
[11:07:30 PM] Yossarian: I'm just asking lol
[11:07:44 PM] Katt: [11:07 PM] Katt:
<<< *coughcough* SLACKER *ahem*[11:07 PM] Katt:
<<< did oyu hear something.... :^)
[11:07:47 PM] Yossarian: oh and add eggs to that list.
[11:07:50 PM] Katt: that was the proper message order
[11:08:01 PM] Katt: anyways, heart is heart
[11:08:06 PM] Yossarian: Alright.
[11:08:23 PM] Katt: it's important for the taurine, as long as he is getting heart it doesn't particularly matter what animal it came from
[11:08:24 PM] Katt:
[11:08:35 PM] Yossarian: Alright.
[11:08:38 PM] Katt: if you can get your hands on some pork brains too that's some good stuff!
[11:08:45 PM] Katt: VERY high in nutrients and taurine
