I would think it would be-I have had the ferrets outside every day that it's been nice, and of course, they love to dig. I have them on revolution, so they are heartworm/flea protected, but I am just making sure that it's fine and safe. We just moved in with my father in law's house until my husband ships and he has a huge yard. I can't help but want the ferrets to make use of it. They seem so happy digging in the dirt, all ferrety-digging in a rice/bean box just isn't the same.

I hope so. I plan do that that when I get my ferts. Im thinking it cant be bad as long as the yard has no chemicals in the grass and stuff. I'd watch out for large birds and things though.

Fungus, mites, bacteria, bugs, etc. can be picked up outside. So... It's always a good idea to inspect your ferrets frequently. (even if they do not go outside) If your ferrets spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want to check into heartworm risk in your area as well.

We quite deliberately don't use much in the way of fertilizers, etc. Ours have a blast digging in the yard

My guys play outside all the time, but please do as Jennifer mentioned check your little ones. My guys picked up a bott larvae last year...it was grosse Both Lady "B" and Lady Natasha had to have one removed. Fun-Go appeared to have a sore as did Odin but both boys seemed to have stronger immune systems than my girls and their immunities attacked and killed the larvae. ciao

Can you tell if bott larvae is in your area via any kind of charts? Those things sound really freaky and make me not want to take ferrets outside. And I was wanting to take them to the Oregon Coast.

I think the long and short of it Candice, is that we cannot protect them from everything. Weigh the pros and cons, and make your decisions from there. The pros, IMO, are the pure pleasure they get from being outside, along with the natural sunlight, etc., versus the odds of getting some form of parasite :/

Exactly. We all have what is called a "risk threshold". There is no right or wrong answer, only the risk you're willing to take against the pleasure that is derived from participating in an action. In all the time that my guys have been playing outside, last summer was the first time I've ever encountered this larvae and yes they're freaky...yuck. I did what I could to eliminate the problem. We will see what happens this summer. ciao

The lawn is not fertilized at all. Hubby's dad isn't really home that much to ever do any lawn work, and doesn't mind if my little diggers 'aerate' the soil for him. I'll check them every day, I have been-and if anything looks iffey, then they'll go straight to the vet. It just doesn't seem right keeping them inside, especially since they can't have free roam anymore living with hubby's dad. Eventually, it'll get too hot for them, but until then, I'd love for them to see the beautiful sunshine and be able to dig in the dirt.

You are talking about having these little ones on a leash right? or an enclosed play area? I just thought with this remark that "I'll check them every day, I have been-and if anything looks iffey, then they'll go straight to the vet....." That makes it sound like they're on their own out in the yard. I'm sure I'm mistaken but please put my mind at ease ciao

Oh no! They're just in a play area, and I'm out with them while they're out there. Gods no, they're not staying outside by themselves. That idea scares me. I mean, I check them when they come in and out for play and randomly through the day. They also have a play area inside! I just like them having more outside time than they did.

My kids love to go outside. Make sure you check your kids over. Not just that day, keep checking for lumps and bumps few days after.
Like Heather one of my kid either pickup a bott egg/larvae. It's not pretty.
Just because your ferrets don't go outside. They can still be exposed to it. Just something to keep your eyes open.
But don't stop taking your kids outdoors....it's great enrichment for them. Let them have fun.
