After their hairball medicine, everybody had quite the appetite! I bet their appetites are a lot better without those nasty furballs in their tummies ;D

Success with the pumpkin!!! In an effort to make a recipe that all the ferrets would eat willingly (including my picky boy Fenton), I mixed the canned pumpkin with just a little drizzle of cream, not enough to make it runny or anything. Then I warmed it up in the microwave. This did wonders! All 5 ferrets lapped it up happily from the teaspoon! Even picky boy Fenton. He turned up his nose at first, but I smeared some on his mouth so he had to lick it off, and it's like he did a double-take, and said "Hey that's yummy!" Then he attacked the teaspoon and ate it up ;D Man, I'm embarassed that I never got this Vaseline / pumpkin routine figured out so well before now It used to be a struggle to make everyone eat their lax or Vaseline, and their pumpkin. From now on, it will be no problem at all! I'm gonna freeze a big batch of pumpkin with a hint of cream in ice cubes when I get back home I have another 5 pound can of pumpkin I haven't opened yet I'm going to give my nephew a 30 day supply of these frozen pumpkin cubes for next time his ferrets shed, and tell him to serve it to them daily warm, and warm Vaseline once or twice a week! (when they are shedding, they aren't right now)

Well, someone passed another hairball, almost as big as the first one I posted, a dense tightly-packed one.
Would you recommend I continue giving Vaseline and pumpkin until no more hairballs come out? Our should I give them a break from the Vaseline for a few days since it hinders absorption of food?

I'm not as knowledgeable about ferrets as most others on here, but in the bit of research I've done I've read that vaseline shouldn't be used very often because it decreases absorption and cleans out the good instestinal bacteria. I used it for a while, but after I switched to EVOO I found that the oil works just as well (actually, I have seen more hairballs come out in their poopies than I ever did with vaseline or lax). As for the pumpkin thing - even though you found something that works with your babies, I had found with mine that they like to have the pumpkin warmed up a bit and a couple of drops of ferretone dropped on top. They eat it up likes it's a spoonful of sugary, fruity goodness

I think I'd ease back on the lax for a bit and see if the pumpkin itself will continue pushing the fur out.

I just wanted to mention something I find curious.
My nephew's girl Stella REALLY loves bones. If I feed her meat with bones in it, she will seek out any bones she can find and eat those first. I think if I gave her a pile of just bones, she would be happy ;D
It's funny because she has the smallest jaws of any of the 5 ferrets (even though Fiona's body is smaller, Stella's jaws are smaller). But Stella has no problem crunching up the bones with her teeny mouth ;D
Could this be indicative of some deficiency or health problem that is making her crave bones more than usual?

I've found preferences like that with mine as well. It *could* be a deficiency, but more likely she just really enjoys the chance to bite and chew.
