This is not pertaining to my fert, but he's around so it could affect him. I got a baby squirrely rescue today who has a TERRIBLE case of mange. He also has some other type of mite in his fur that leaves and bites me. He is much too weak for a bath or any chemical treatment tonight, but this weekend something will have to be done about it, for his sake and everyone else's. To be honest, I expected him to die within hours of his arrival, but he has been here for 6 hours now and is improving with leaps and bounds, much to my relief. I was wondering a few things- are there any holistic treatments that could provide relief from the mites, or dry, mangy skin for now, for the sake of all present? Can Bode, or any of my other critters, catch these mites? I want to say no, since squirrely diseases usually are only squirrely, but want to make sure. Is it safe or alright to have the squirrel (caged, out of reach) in my room for the night? He will need to be fed periodically and it's easiest for me if he is nearby, since the dark terrifies me. And some pictures, since he's cute and I like him- He progressed from being unable to move to pooping and stealing my syringe! GIMME GIMME You can see one of many bare spots in that one^ His skin is crusted and itchy, and he shows extensive hair loss and irritation, including some open sores. His tail has growths, probably due to mange, on it, along with bare spots and caked on blood from him chewing at the itching. Hey this stuff isn't so bad! I am planning on calling my vet tomorrow and will run over there if he thinks it's necessary but the wee one is stable for now.

Poor wee thing! Unfortunately- ALL your other mammals can contract mange. Keep him strictly separate, and I may even go so far as changing your clothes before interacting with the others. No idea about holistic methods for mange. Have you tried googling it for ideas?

Haven't googled it, I was thinking some olive oil could soothe his skin, it's a common remedy for dry tails with rats.
I believe that he has a squirrel specific type of mange, which is fairly common. He is the second squirrel I've seen in the area he was found who shows hair loss.
I think when I treat him I will dose everyone with revolution just to be safe, does that sound like a good idea? Revolution kills mange mites of all types, even Sarcoptic, which is the one that isn't species specific. That way there shouldn't be any time for mites to catch hold if there is any cross-contamination.
I think he will stay in the bathroom for the night, which is down the hall from me, so close, but not with my other furry babies. I don't let him touch my clothes and wash like crazy after holding him at all.

check out sublimed sulfer or sulphur depending where you live. I used it for Emmett, my potbelly piggy, when he was a teensy baby. He contracted mange. We made a paste of it, and smeared him snout to tail to tootsies. He looked like a little bitty YELLOW easter piglet! Vet said to let the paste dry and repeat every couple days for about 10 days, if I recall.
This also works well for ticks.
Cheers, Kim

We are off to the vet today to get him looked at.
He's doing much better though, alert and being pretty normal for a baby his age.

We're back! He was treated with Revolution, and I have an ointment that will clear up the lesions, protect from infection, and soothe his painful skin. Poor little guy was great for the vet, and was checked with a black light, among other things, to make sure it really is mange.
He is on the road to recovery now, and I couldn't be more thankful to my awesome vet, who fit us in on short notice and then didn't charge for anything but the meds.

I would have paid any amount to get him checked out, I'm just lucky my vet is so awesome. (I'm also in there really regularly I pay for all the vet care by myself so it can get kind of pricey, but they know me and like me. That's what get for have 28 permanent residents, and a rescue squirrel lol) Jackie, I could never turn a little one away. He deserves to get love and get better, so he can live a happy life, hopefully as a wild squirrel. If that cannot happen for any reason he will have a home here to live out his life in peace. He is still unwilling to urinate, because the skin on his sheath is so painful, but the ointment should help with that. Here's a new picture-

He is urinating and pooping and sucking down food and he actually scampered this morning! Here's a picture- I am so proud of the little guy. He is very attached to me, and will panic if other people come too close to him, but likes when I hold and pet him. He'll tolerate petting from others if I am holding him, but he doesn't like it much. It's very heartwarming to see him getting better and see that he likes me.

This brings back memories. I had a pet squirrel that we rescued as an abandoned baby. I raised him by hand and release him to the wild when it was time. He still visited me for a number of years in our backyard but eventaully stopped. Don't know if nature interviened but I like to think he found himself a lady squirrel and had better things to do. ;D

Yep, he's done that for sure. He likes me and no one else.
Another exciting thing happened- this morning he was running around my bathroom, and came out of his cage when I went to fill the syringe multiple times. He's getting braver and more energetic by the day. Soon he will be at the terrible age of hyperactivity 24/7. I have had other squirrels at that age.. thinking about them makes me tired even now! Lol. It will be fun to play with him and watch him grow though, even if at the end of the day, playing with him and Bode and everyone else has me exhausted.
