All of mine are mill ferrets, and none of them have ever poofed- no matter how startled or angry they may have been.

I would think that if the anal glands were impacted. Then the ferret wouldn't not be able to release it (poof).
I had two boys that had their anal glands got impacted and we had to release them. Anal gland secretions was very thick and white. Yes, it does smell.
Maybe if the ferret had a bacterial infections, it may proof more often.
Any thoughts or experience on this?

I've never had either of my two poofers have problems, though I heard that there were some major problems with some ferrets that were rescued a few years ago. These were a farm/breeder who dumped all his/her breedstock on a rescue. Everyone worked together to find space for these poor little ones and a lot of them had very serious health issues. One of the issues was the impaction of anal glands. Now their problems were both congenital and bacterial. The solution that most people dealing with these little ones was to have their glands removed as they became absessed. I would think that both scent glands are removed as little farm ferrets cannot poof (even a little bit, and yes a very cruel and useless practice as this doesn't change the scent or smell of the ferret at all ) ciao

I've never had any trouble with any of mine re impacted anal glands in over 12 years, and they're all intact. The kits may poof occasionally, but it's rare after they're around 3 months old. The only time I've ever had older kits or adults poof is when they were startled and/or very upset by something.

Some ferrets are just plain leaky. One of my girls was leaky - so my gang was terrible - the entire house smelled, and my husband's asthma got really bad, and people who wore contacts would get burning eyes in the house. We put up with this for a year, and instead of things geting better, they got worse ....even though the girls had been spayed. I called the breeder and explained the situation. We were both horrified by the situation. The breeder had no options to offer. However, she felt that my brats had a good home and a well-renowned vet with known-to-be-outstanding surgical skills. Thus, she gave permission to do the descenting. I felt so guilty.....
To make a long story short, My brats are now 6 and have no issues with their little bums inspite of the late descenting. This is something I really, really, really tried to avoid.....I still feel guilty about this even though everything worked out well and the surgery was not traumatic for them.....I constantly hear that late descenting commonly has a very bad outcome. Ugh!!! I still get traumatized thinking about what we went through and the stress of making that decision and then worrying to death that I had mutilated their little bums!!!

Some ferrets are just plain leaky. One of my girls was leaky --jennifer You also said this in an earlier post: "Some ferrets are just leaky. one of my girls was leaky all the time, so all 4 were off-gassing constantly." I'd suspect a congenital defect of some kind in the one who was leaky, as that is certainly not normal. I don't understand why the others were poofing, though, unless they also had a similar type of defect. Did your vet find anything unusual or abnormal when he descented them?

LOL...my brain is so broken these days that I can't remember what I've posted ...must be my alzheimmer's kicking in no....there were no issues found when the kids were dedescented. (My "poofer-butt" is - and always been good at occasionally cutting tiny "fert farts" upon occassion -even when not in the potty box. Unlike dog farts, they don't stink. She just seems to have a "relaxed back end".) I just suspected that my "poofer-butt" was so stinky that the others all got into the habit of bombing all the time. This is not the only instance I've heard of where one "stinker" instigates constant butt-bombs within a crew - even after the culprit is descented. I hear that true, non-stop leaky-butts are rare- which would have to be the case. Nobody would put up with this, so descenting surgeries would be more common if true leakers were common. The surgeries were over 500. per ferret....so nobodies going to do this unless there's a HUGE and BAD stinky problem. I'm just soooooo greatful that everything worked out. I NEVER want to go through the stress of worrying whether or not their butts will be ruined for life....I still worry and it has been about 5 years since the surgeries. I still keep worrying that their bums may wear out prematurely. SO, far, I see no signs of any issues. -jennifer
