@ Acodin - a tupperware with lid works well IF you attach tubing through a hole in the tupperware. The tunnel then serves as a buffer between your carpet and kicked out rice.

I was thinking of doing a bunch of ping pong balls since everything else worries me for either the carpet's sake or the fert's sake.. or in the case of paper- the dig box's sake. Kahlua likes to go to the bathroom on paper. She reminds me of the cat my family had when I was growing up who would see a tiny scrap of paper and try to curl up as small as possible (kinda hard since she was a fatty) on top of the tiny scrap of paper (she also liked to try to sleep in boxed 3x smaller than herself and get upset when they broke) but yea if there is a SPECK of paper on the floor Kahlua will try to direct her bum exactally over that speck so I think a paper scraps dig box would become an unintentional litter box. I think ping pong balls would be funn and probably not dangerous, unless there is some hidden danger im not taking into consideration..?

Mine use newsprint for pottying as well. But they've never used the shredded paper for that. For my first rice dig box, I just used a largish cardboard box, with the seams duct taped closed. It worked well for the year I used it! Mine also love ping pong balls in the box, towels, dirty laundry, anything really! A favourite is plastic bags, although that one is direct supervision only! The only thing to watch for with even organic potting soil is the styrofoam bits frequently used to hold the water in.

I also have used toilet paper and paper towel rolls (with the paper and without the paper). The toilet paper ended up being used for the bathroom so now it's just paper towels occasionally I tried the towels tonight and they seemed to like it somewhat, but not as much as ping pong balls

I had to take the peanuts away, too - Melinda thought they were much better than food. However, they LOVE their rice box (large cardboard box with the seams taped). Melinda and Damia both like to use it to clean their faces after meals as well as to play in. teri

Mr. Bean steals them one at a time and chows down. If he gets caught he will sometimes bounce away.
