RIP little buddy. My Hamster Hamlet died today. I have always hated hamsters, but this little guy stole my heart. He was born here when my roommate was breeding hamster pinkies for her snake and I just liked him. I have never liked, much less loved a hamster before. And now he is dead and I think it is MY fault! I have been so stressed and busy lately that he took the back burner. If I feed him every day, he will only pick out the good parts and not eat the healthy stuff too. I was going to feed him Sat and then I came home to my ceiling and forgot all about the poor little guy. Last night he was fine. I found him right before class tonight. I don't think he had been dead too long as the body was stiff, but still "fresh" no stink. By the end of class he smelled so...yeah. I was going into his cage to give him some of his favorite treat - fresh Zucchini and he didn't come to the door. I jiggled his home and he still wouldn't come out. I had a sinking feeling then so I pulled the box out and that is how I found him. Stretched out in his nest box.
I felt wrong throwing him away like garbage, but the ground is frozen so I could not bury him. Instead I decided to throw him into the woods. I found a nice quiet drop off overlooking the ocean and buried him there. His little body can feed the wildlife, just like Nature intended. I am sorry little buddy, you were the best Hamster ever!
Eating in his wheel.
He was SOO cute!
Having a treat after his bath
Bathtime! He seemed to enjoy it believe it or not!
Oh Katt, that is horrible news. It seems so strange that he'd go for such a short time without food and then something would happen--especially when he was fine the day before. Like non-pets get food every day, they forage. Don't blame yourself. Surely something else was going on that you didn't know about. Hamsters are tough to care for -- so many more unknowns than ferrets even. I always have nightmares about these kinds of things after the gerbs. And it is even harder to tell when something is wrong with a rodent than with a ferret. *hugs* Feel better and know he is happy and waiting at the bridge.
Poor wee Hamlet, poor Katt. Nothing is worse than bearing the burden of a life lost. I think, like was previously mentioned, that your little one probably had other issues going on. Grieve as you must, but don't blame yourself. Your little one is running free. I will light a candle for wee Hamlet, to guide his little paws on to his next great adventure ciao
I'm so sorry for your loss, Katt. He was a real cutie - those pictures of him after a bath made me grin. At least it looks like you had some wonderful memories with him, and it looks like he was a happy little guy while he had his time with you. <3
Hey- he couldn't have had a better home. And it doesn't matter the species- when they steal a piece of your heart, it remains stolen. I am so sorry for your loss of your little furfriend.
