Not quite a month into raw and I am already sick of my chest freezer, what's a good upright freezer? I'm feeding 4 ferrets and a cat and like to stock up on whole prey and raw.

Yeah, this freezer was free, my brother moved to MO and left it behind, it's not very big, maybe 7 cubic feet and I need to figure out a better way to manage the food in it. I've had to take out so much to get to lower stuff and so far have left out one pizza and some ice cream on accident, set it aside and just forgot to put it back in. I definately want a bigger, upright one, full of shelves and drawers to separate my meat. I don't know that I'll ever switch the dogs to raw as well, but I'd like to have the option.

I had an upright freezer for a time. Hated it. Huge waste of space. I presently have two, a 22 cu and a 24 cu chest freezer. My only complaint is I need a third ciao

Sounds like you just need one huge one Heather! My freezer's in my basement so space is not an issue at all, it's always cold down there anyways so I like to get in and out as soon as possible and that doesn't happen with the chest freezer. I went and priced some today, found a couple nice ones between 12-14 cubic feet for $450-$500. My b/f works at kmart and his work is selling a couple too, we can get a discount there so I'm going to check those out this weekend I think.

Keep an eye out on places like craig's list and kijiji. You may find one someone is getting rid of to "upgrade"

Yeah in hindsight I'm kicking myself, this house came with a large chest freezer, but that was almost 4 years ago and I didn't have a use for it. Around here, freezers are snatched up like hotcakes, so many hunters, everyone in my family has a freezer so I can buy more than mine holds no matter what but that's kind of a hassle.

Sadly Jeff and I live in such a small apartment we can only fit a 3 cubic foot freezer.....though we can't afford that or a 1 cf. $80+ for such a tiny amount of space! We are going to have a hard time switching to raw obviously

Well mine isn't so packed now that I took out that other bucket of meat to thaw and rebag and I have probably a 6 month supply of food in there for 4 ferrets. So really you can get away with a small one and just buying more frequently. Since I had all my whole prey and organs shipped in, I bought in bulk. Tomorrow I'm going to rearrange it to make things easier on me.

We have been trying to get with a guy from CL about a 12 cb ft freezer, as it is only 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Hopefully we get it!

I'd like to ask - how big is everyone's freezer (cu. ft) and how many lbs on average can you fit in it? I'm trying to buy a freezer large enough for a month's worth of food, but I have no idea what size freezer I'd need.

If you are planning for 3 ferret x a month, you could easily get away with a 5 cu foot, that's the smallest I ever see for sale. Mine's a 7 cu foot full of whole prey including 2 whole rabbits, large quail, bunch of guinea pigs, etc, plus organs and various meats from hare today, and a bunch of store bought pork, chicken, cgh and turkey, it's probably 3/4 full and I could probably feed my crew of 4 for at least 3 months just off what's in there.
