I've been dreading writing this post for a couple of weeks. I just can't find the words.. just thinking about it is getting me all teary eyed..
Meeko first found me last May. I had been searching craigslist on a near daily basis, looking for a Fn141 or 143 to add to my current cage. I happened across an ad that said "ferret must go asap!" and read a story that broke my heart.
Meeko's owner had passed away, and he was given to the daughter, who didn't know how to take care of him, and didn't want to. She was giving him away for free to the first person who came to the door.. so I bolted! I drove 30 minutes in the dead of night, to a crummy part of town, to go save this poor little guy.
The first week he stayed with me, I was sure I would lose him. He became very sick with stress and would vomit anything he ate or drank. We practically lived at the vet that week, but he fought his way through it and became my little buddy.
A few weeks before New Years, I began noticing symptoms of insulinoma. Every now and then, he would do the pawing-at-the-mouth thing. But that was the only symptom he ever displayed up until December when drooling started to accompany it, and a fair bit of hind end weakness. He could walk, but couldn't get up the ramps in the cage. By the time I was able to get him into the vet, he started having seizures.
Early in February, he had a massive seizure in the middle of the night. He had barely begun his treatments. It was horrific. Our local emergency vet doesn't have an exotics vet, but we took him anyway and were able to stabilize him. A few hours later, he had another massive seizure and passed away before we could get him back to the vet. I don't know how old he was, but we assume somewhere around 4.
Meeko was such an amazing little guy. He was always the friendliest, kindest, most gentle, most mellow boy I'd ever known. My little chunky monkey. My buddy who went everywhere with me, curled up inside my jacket. I miss him something fierce..
