miamiferret2- No, he never had any diarrhea. I don't think it was anything blockage-related. The vet took x-rays because she thought it might be that too, but nothing came up. We didn't have her do a necropsy, mostly because the symptoms pointed very clearly to something causing hemorrhaging in the upper intestinal tract, thus the black, tarry stools. These only first occurred on the drive to the emergency clinic, and within 30 minutes he had passed. I know now that he was sick all along, probably from a combination of things, and I wish I had known enough to recognize the signs then. But when I first brought him in, my vet didn't note anything unusual about his size, took a stool sample and examined it under microscope, and everything checked out. I never saw him grind his teeth and his appetite was normal. A lot of the signs of him having stomach ulcers just weren't there until it was too late.

From the description is sounds as though it might have been an actual defect or cancer of the bowel. It's too bad a necropsy wasn't done. I don't blame you for that. I realize that the cost and the thought at the time wasn't there. It's hard to think straight when you're furbaby has just left for the bridge far before his time. I hope that you get some satisfaction from Marshals ciao
