Yep, she's just been spayed, rescues over here won't rehome an animal without spaying/castrating it except in severe circumstances, such as where a medical conditions does not allow for anaesthetic. They're pretty meticulous about it as well- she was there for less than 48 hours before she was spayed, microchipped, distempter jabbed and had her nails clipped. She all healthy, just very skinny and miserable.
P.S. Silly question, but do ferrets have belly buttons? Surely they must do, as they are mammals and would have an umbilical cord, but I've never seen one?

Oh, they do. They're just too tiny to see. Think about how little they are at birth

I remember when I was first introduced to ferrets and was told that the boys had "belly buttons" and the girls didn't. ;D

I've seen a video on youtube a bloke repeatedly kissing his male ferret and saying in a baby voice "you love having you belly button kissed, don't you?". Needless to say, it wasn't it's belly button, though it seemed to quite enjoy it still....

Good news- had the home visit and everything is fine, so we can go and pick her up tomorrow I've brought them a new "mini-hutch", which I left in their run last night, and have stuffed full of clothes. They've abandoned their old sleepbox in favour of this, so I'm guessing it's a success: www.justforpets.uk.com/pet/Small-Animals/Small-animal-housing/small-animal-home/We've got a heavy frost coming this weekend- do you think it'll be okay to leave the out in their run with this so they can snuggle in it, or not?

That looks great go ahead and leave it in there. Maybe you can run the clothes in the dryer so they are nice and toasty for them at night.

I think I will try this over the cold weekend and the heated wheat bag thing to give them that extra boost, especially when we have this new little girl here. She's very tame, but her coat and emaciation suggests she was an indoor ferret who has been living rough, and I want her to bulk up and not burn all of her fat keeping warm.

Congratulations on your newest I don't know anything about the whole indoor/outdoor living thing...my guys wouldn't survive outside (though honestly, this year we've had it warmer than you so this year they could have lived outside ). Would your wee new girl not have the fat layers and coat to live outside? If she was an indoor fuzz will she not get too cold? I know that this is always a concern with dogs going from an indoor situation to an unheated kennel but as ferrets don't live outside in Canada I honestly don't know the answer to this, but I would be concerned ciao

That's sort of what I was thinking, but she's been in the rescue a week and she's been outdoors with less shelter than she'll have here, so I guess she survived that okay. I suppose I'll just keep a close eye on her. If she's looks like she's getting too cold and shivery I'll sneak her in and hope my landlord doesn't show up unannounced, which he's prone to doing, but I'd rather not keep bering her in and putting her out, I don't think it'll be conducive to intergrating her into the group, or good for her health either.

It was just a concern. If she's been outside all along then I guess it's ok I just knew that my guys (being the pusses they are would never survive outside ciao
