Jack is currently OBSESSED with freeze dried duck hearts and I end up giving him one every time he gives me the boo-boo eyes. Other than the exorbitant cost, is there any problem with him eating ~ 10 in a day? Bare in mind the ten is his weekend number when I'm home to give them to him, weekdays he will likely scam me into giving him about five

I should think 10 hearts in one day is too much... If you think about how many they would have naturally if they were in the wild for example they most certainly would never get this much. The diet you provide to him needs to be balanced, everything you give him needs to be in proportion... don't you find that he is full and doesn't eat anything else when you give him so many hearts in one day?

M brats love freeze-dried heats as well. A tip - Break them into small pieces. That way he can still be spoiled but not eat as many. When he keeps coming back for more, offer a different treat. Yes, he'll give you the wide-eyed, "dumb hob" look, but eventually he'll learn that these are treats and he can't stuff his face with as many a he wants.

The biggest problem is that he's going to fill up on these and not eat his regular diet.

duh, great idea Jennifer. Btw, which freeze dried hearts do you buy? I've been ordering the Fresh is Best but they are sooooo expensive. Of course if I start cutting them, they won't go so fast

Personally I don't think you can feed too much heart as long as he is getting his other food sources. Usually, the main muscle meats of my mixes are chicken hearts and chicken wings. Plus hearts are an excellent source of taurine which you can never have too much of

Surprisingly the hearts haven't really been affected his appetite. He's still eating his regular meals

If he's eating normal amounts of his regular meals, all you'd have to worry about is weight gain, since duck is heavy in fat. Can't see the heart being much different I think I'd start just breaking them up. I do that with the FD chicken hearts and elk kidney.

Is he actually eating these? Or begging and stashing? I feed raw heart every day to my crew, but no where near 5 to 10 per ferret per day - 2 turkey hearts quartered gives them each one piece. They do dive onto the heart first so I know its a tastey morsel for them. But if they were hunting their own prey - there's no way they'd be taking down 5 to 10 ducks in a day in order to just eat the heart. Yeah, at that rate, I'd d be worried about an imbalance of other nutrients. No worries about a Taurine overdose - its not possible. Too much fat from the heart? MAybe - but ferret's bodies utilize fat well and they aren't prone to cholesterol troubles like humans are. Its the other nutrients I'd be concerned that he's missing.
Cheers, Kim

Yes Kim, he was actually eating them. He has since been forced to slow down on them. I've gotten over his boo-boo eyes and begging and he only gets 1-2 a day. Somedays he even forgets about them and I dont remind him.
