It is never easy to write these, to write here. To put words here means that another little one has danced his or her way to the bridge. On Friday afternoon, another wee one began his journey. He came to me with a wee little girlie friend. Neither knew how to play or be ferrets. They had been loved, but their people could no longer care for them, they had lost everything. Their jobs, their home and finally....their wee little fuzzes. Captain Jack was one of those fuzzies. At first he did nothing but sleep in his cage and snuggle
After all, that's what good ferrets do...but that's not what real ferrets do. Fun-Go B. Squiggly and Napoleon took Captain Jack under their furry arms and taught him how to be a ferret (it was supposed to be the other way around, Captain Jack was supposed to teach Fun-Go how to be a good ferret). Captain Jack never looked back, he learned to run, dook, fight and play with the best of them.
He learned to play with friends and hang out (Captain Jack and Napoleon...I'm sure the pair of them are making very merry at the bridge)
He learned that the outdoors wasn't a scary place but a space for adventure and to have fun
He learned to eat a good diet, though he could never hurt anything...it always had to be frozen. When given the opportunity to make a kill he scooped the wee mice up and snuggled them. If any died it was from being smothered not from any damage that he ever intended.
A couple of years ago, Captain Jack developed adrenal. He at first could control his urges with the melatonin but soon that wasn't enough...lupron never worked but he didn't give up. He kept fighting. That was Jack. He got his first DES implant and he was away to the races. Then the implants were late and Jack got very sick again.
Again we tried lupron and doubled the dose. Nothing. Then the diagnosis came back...Captain Jack's problem wasn't just his adrenal tumours anymore...Captain Jack's heart was giving out. Jackie wasn't ready to go, so drugs it was and new DES implant and once again he was away. Nothing can keep a good ferret down. He slowed down but he was still fighting.
That horrible heart of his wasn't finished with him yet...fate would once again turn it's ugly face at him. Laid low with a spinal thrombosis caused by his heart condition, it looked poor. But, Jack-Jack pulled it off and fought it anyway....in the end though...Captain Jack's heart was his undoing. No longer able to breathe, no longer able to play...the light gone from those beautiful dark eyes....a gift I give you my sweet boy. Goodbye...Sweet Captain Jack. My heart breaks but you're free and around your neck hangs a heart key. I know that once you find Calypso and Napoleon that you too will come to visit again. Gentle journey my sweet boy
ciao
