So Koda AND Kenai have an appointment Wed for Lupron shots. Koda for his first shot and to find out about getting des implants, and Kenai for the preventative Lupron. The preventative Lupron is one Lupron shot annually. But in my other thread, everyone kept saying not to do just one shot, but then other mentioned having done the preventative Lupron. So then do you guys do Lupron shots monthly as a preventative? I am very confused. I have to decide PRONTO what to do because I have to either cancel the appt for Kenai, or get some $ together for exam and shot for Kenai (he has not been into the vet yet), plus shot for Koda. Should I DO the preventative, one time per year Lupron preventative shot for Kenai? Or no? I did not get it for Koda and now look...

That is totally your call. Me personally, I wouldn't. It doesn't last long enough to be a preventitive IMO. Could you get your vet to do some research on the des and in the meantime just give koda the lupron. Also I don't think Koda is adrenal. I think it is just that time of year. My Sid is the same way as Koda, beats the living crap out of Fog. But it actually has slowed down now.

Well there's one month lupron and a 4 month shot, which are they giving? I don't do preventative shots, but I wouldn't bother with a one month, I can't see that doing any good at all and possibly just throwing the adrenal issue even more out of whack. Not to mention you may not see any improvment with just a month. I don't think there's any real studies on preventative hormones yet for adrenal, at least not that I've seen. Currently I'm using monthly Lupron for Pip, who was showing hair loss and mating behavior and diagnosed off that.

As for a single shot not having an effect on actual adrenal- not true. Both Zeus and Athena had very positive results within 3 weeks of their first shot. Sinnead did take a second for it to have a positive benefit.

I agree with sherry one shot does have an effect. Problem is if you give it once a year as a prevention I don't know if that will work.

From what I understand, the problem with a single shot for prevention is you have a much higher probability of missing that crucial window where the hormones peak.

OK, here are the facts and theories based upon studies... 1. Monthly lupron (30-day) works better than 3-/4-month depots. 2. A first 30-day shot will be effective - it may take time for results to show. 3. With the 30-day shot, you need to give at LEAST 3 shots (4 is probably better) because anything shorter than a 3-month treatment will result in a rebound of hormonal activity that's potential much higher than if no shots had been given at all. 4. Maximum control of adrenal disease ideally requires that the ferret is on meds all the time, which is much more feasible with Deslorelin due to cost and convenience. 5. To be most effective, preventive shots (which typically are not given all year if lupron is used due to expense) are given prior to the highest peak of hormonal stimulation. The problem is that we do not know when this may be since it theoretically this varies by latitude. Here's the article that discusses this... www.aemv.org/Documents/2006_AEMV_proceedings_10.pdfI tried pasting the article below - it was a MESS. Read this stuff and let me know if you have any questions. I have seen another artcle that's good - I will look for it since I believe it's easier to understand. jennifer
