Haha yeah its sooo funny the noises he's making... I never heard dooking that fast and furious, or with so many different patterns haha... I wish I got a recording of how he sounded when he was chasing her around under the bed trying to catch her ;D
One thing that sounded SO silly was, for a little while he was following her around on the floor, singing his hob song, with his mouth wide open! It sounded SO wierd! ;D

Well, I wondered when Mike mentioned a good bit of the dooking was done with his mouth opened. I know cats do that to better "taste" the smell. So I googled it ;D

Well, I'm currently staying at my Mom's house in the mountains, and the ferrets are staying in the same room as me (Finn in a separate cage from Fenton and Fiona). This morning, at the crack of dawn, the ferrets were going nuts and I couldn't sleep! Finn was pawing and digging at the cage bars, and Fenton was BITING the cage bars, and digging at the floor behind the litterbox, making all kinds of noise! It was starting to wake up people in the next room. Fiona on the other hand was being a good girl. So, this might sound like a dirty trick, but here's what I did... I let Fenton and Finn out in the playpen, and of course Finn immediately started trying to scruff and mount Fenton. Fenton however was ready for a tussle! Boy Fenton must have eaten his Wheaties this morning... They wrestled and battled like crazy for like 5 minutes, both ferrets dooking constantly! Fenton moved so fast, avoiding getting pinned by Finn, and squirming on top! It was a great wrestling match. Nobody got too rough. Fat Finn had the weight and strength advantage but skinny Fenton had speed on his side. I think Fenton gave as good as he got this time! After a few minutes, both ferrets were tired out and stopped wrestling. I put them back in their cages and they were quiet after that, and I was able to go back to sleep. Ah silence is golden... Am I a bad ferrent for letting them fight to tire themselves out?

That was a great idea! No one got hurt, so no- you aren't a "bad" ferrent for letting those two friends play while you were right there

LOL Sometimes I forget ferrets play rough, and Fenton, being deaf, is especially vocal. But today I think they both probably enjoyed the wrestling match as opposed to just staying in cage being bored and hyper

Does anyone know a good, but gentle, way to get a hob to release when he's holding onto another ferret?
This morning the ferrets were going nuts in their cages and I let them out to wrestle. Fenton and Finn wrestled good and got tired out, but Fiona was biting the cage bars too, so I made the mistake of letting her in the playpen with Finn, thinking he would harass her a little but not too much.
Well, he dragged her around and wouldn't let go. I read on there that you can squeeze the ferret's cheeks / lips on the side, so that they are kind of biting their own cheeks, to make them release. I did that, and it worked, and I put Fiona away.
However, this morning I notice Finn's lips have little red pin-sized dots where I pushed them in, obviously this was too rough on the delicate skin around his mouth. I felt really bad, I won't ever do this trick again unless it's an emergency. I didn't realize it was hurting him at the time but it makes sense, their lips must be fairly delicate and he has very strong jaws and did not want to let go.
Is there a better way to make them release, or should I just not let Fiona around Finn any more until next Fall? I can't be doing things to Finn that hurt him, I don't want to lose his trust. Even when he is going nuts trying to mount Fiona he doesn't bite me, and I think that shows what a good temperament he has, and I don't want to mess that up.
Oh P.S. - Finn hadn't punctured Fiona's skin or made her bleed or anything, it's not that he was biting too hard, he just didn't want to let go and she was getting upset.

I took a picture, this is embarrassing for me and I feel really bad about it, but I want to warn others that using the "push in the lips" trick can hurt the delicate skin around their mouth. Finn doesn't seem to be bothered by it but who knows really what he's thinking? It looks like it hurt and I won't do it again. Attachments:

Well, mikey, i don't know of anything that can make a ferret let go. They're like a bulldog, supposedly, in that sense. Have you tried treats? if Finn loooooves food, he may just let go just to get a tasty treat.

To be honest- I'd keep Fiona away until after he's out of rut. If he's getting that determined, it won't be long before he attempts penetration.
