So Bo and Nova both have Upper Respiratory Infections and have to go on Clavamox twice a day for 10 days (thankfully Petland paid for all of this : . But of course this "Petland approved" vet only has unflavoured oral clavamox , which means that it tastes awful which means that Bo and Nova want NOTHING to do with it. So I need tips! I've tried scruffing and syringing but they both have hardly any skin to scruff and they are too wiggly to get the syringe in their mouths. I managed to get SOME of the first dose into them by holding them down with my arm, opening their mouth with one hand, and sticking the syringe in and squriting the meds as quick as humanly possible with the other, but that wasn't fun for anyone. So what works best? Mixing it with ferretone? Hiding it in their soups? Or is there a better way to hold them and syringe it into their mouths? The little monsters also have mites and I have to dose them with Ivermectin INTO their ears once every 10 days for 3 treatments. That went surprisingly well though ;D I just snuck it into their ears while they were sleeping But that also means 20 more days of quarantine. Poor little ferts.

The ferret tonne might work. I would try that first and see what works. But then again I'm a lot newer at this.

You could try sandwiching it between the ferretone (if you're not too concerned that they will hate it for the rest of their life ) The stuff I'm cramming into Lady "B" (she's on clavamox too) is banana flavoured. She thinks it's disgusting but I'm guessing it's not as bad as the unflavoured stuff . She sputters a bit but after a head shake she doesn't seem to mind and takes her fish oils as a chaser. Don't put it in their soupy...they may never touch their soupy again I know you don't have RC ferrets (persay) but they don't have a lot of scruff, Minion has next to none, so you have to get it right the first time and in the few seconds it takes for them to wiggle out of it. If you place the syringe right at the corner of their mouth (as far as it goes) there is a gap in the jaw where there is no teeth...that's where you put the syringe. It takes only a second and it practically never fails (only misses if they twist out of your grip). Hope that helps a bit ciao

No scruff makes giving meds. a pain-in-the-butt! Here is what I do...... in he syringe, draw up some ferretone, then the meds, then more ferretone. Make sure the tip of the syringe taste like ferretone! roll the ferret snugly in a towel with the front legs tucked inside the towel. tuck the "ferret burrito"as best as possible. get the fert licking the "tone off the tip of the syringe. Once the ferret is interested in the ferretone, insert the tip of the syringe into the the side of the mouth, just in front of the back molars. when the ferret starts to chew, move the tip of the syringe between the top and bottom of the molars, and the meds can be delivered sideways into the mouth. there are 3 reasons why it helps to deliver the meds as far back in the jaw as possible... 1. if you put meds in the frnt of the mouth, the meds will flow over ALL the taste buds in the mouth 2. wedging the syringe tip between the molars GREATLY limits range of motion of the ferret's head. 3. delivering meds sideways into the mouth reduces the risk that the ferret will aspirate the meds (shooting the meds diectly towar the back of the throat is risky , especially if you have a syringe that binds/sticks. This technique comes from years of practice on baby foxes, coyotes and raccoons!!! -jennifer

And if all else fails, tightly burrito, lay ferret on back lengthwise on lap with butt toward you, lay upper half if you body to pin them in place, gives meds the way Jennifer mentioned while holding head still with other hand. Yeah, Boris

Thank you!!!! I am sure I can get the drugs in them using one of those methods ;D I'll just have to experiment and see what works best with each. I won't put it in their soup for sure though! They finally ate soup-covered chicken chunks tonight! So I don't want to risk ruining that! Defintely helpful advice, maybe we should sticky these tips?

If I ever have to give Boris a med he's refusing, I'm planning on video taping it and stickying it But yeah, I think it might be an idea to sticky this in the interim ;D

Meeko hates her PediaPred too Fortunately, she's scruffable, but I have to split the 3ccs in three little doses in her mouth or else she just spits it out.... She's MUCH better too now that I give some Tone before the Pred. She use to knock the syringe out if my hand REALLY easily before Now she just bares her teeth before swallowing every time... Poor girl... it really must be gross!! If everything else proves to not help much, maybe try to divide the meds in little doses? Like give a tiny amount every 5 minutes, letting them steam off their frustration with you a bit? lol I have no idea if this would work or is a good idea, but who knows... maybe worth a try? Good luck! Let us know!!

I prefer to get it over with all at once...that way they can be angry with me and get it over. Otherwise, every time I try to catch up with them, they run away, even when I'm not trying to medicate them ciao

I separate in 3 doses one after the other right after she swallows (not even unscruffing her), but I just got the feeling her guys didn't want to do it that way either... :S

Well that went a LITTLE bit better anyways I sandwiched the meds inbetween ferretone and did the whole burrito/shove the syringe into the back of their mouth method. The meds all got into them but they are still NOT happy What are the risks of their aspirating on it? I have to squirt it in quickly or they wont get it, but I'm making sure to do it as sideways as possible. They are shaking their head afterwards and trying to spit it up but they aren't coughing as I imagine would happen if some was getting into their lungs? This is really stressing the poor babies out though and making our bonding/no-biting training go a million steps back I might be able to get a "wild-berry" flavoured version of the meds from my work tonight (will just have to show our vet the current meds and if the concentration matches up, I'm sure they will let me take a bottle). Do you think that's worth a try? Olivia and Sophie have had the wild berry clavamox before and absolutley LOVED it. I think I might do that... Poor Bo hacks his lungs out all night If the meds don't kick in a few days I'm gonna have to bring him back and have them check his lungs again. The vet said they sounded clear and they looked okay on the xray I took (wasn't the greatest xray - kind of blurry ;D) but the poor little man is not happy
