Brady has a check-up coming up on Feb. 4th. I'm thinking about going ahead and implanting him with the Deslorelin. He turned one in August so is it too late to try it out as a preventative measure? He's extra-super itchy these last few months and really yellow. Next to Pip who is pure white, Brady looks like a disgusting little beast (which he is, but that's unrelated). Is their first year as an adult more hormonal than the later years? Jack and Pip were both adults when they found me so I have nothing to compare with.
@ MiamiFerret - I know you implant as a preventative. what's your thoughts on this for Brady?

Yes, they do tend to get more yellow when they hit their maturity, and some are simply oilier than others. And no- it's not too late to use as a preventative

not too late to use as a preventive. i know several people that are implanting their 2 & 3 year old ferrets for the first time to prevent. none of those ferrets were showing any adrenal signs at time of their first implant. Sonny is 1 and 1/2 now. he just had his 2nd implant this month (we gave him his first implant at 5 months of age). he's doing great and he's still a fatty. the itchies could be a number of things. not always adrenal but it is a sign. I would not jump to adrenal so fast though. i think that ferrets in general are just itchy creatures. LOL. so definitely I would recommend deslorelin as a preventive. before I did it i consulted with several very ferret knowledgeable vets and they all said this is the way to go.

I'm not even thinking he's showing adrenal yet, just a hormone spike due to reaching maturity. I have wanted to implant him since I got him but I missed last January I'm going to give my vet a call and see if she has them in stock or will by our appointment time. Thanks for the input ladies

Have all of them showed symptoms? Just got off the phone with the vet. She has an implant set aside and it will only cost $135 (good, eh?). They are requiring we update his rabies to do it though *knock on wood* Pip and Jack are not showing symptoms. Jack is at least 4 and Pip will be 6 in the Spring.

All of mine are getting their implants soon. Once they come in. I ordered 10, but only 8 are getting them. 2 left in case my older 2 start showing signs. But they are 7/8 years old with no symptoms, so I didn't want to implant them. Huck and Lily were both 3 when they get their first preventative implant. Sid was 1 and Indy was 6 months. Now I have Sunny and Shady getting thier first one, they are not quite one yet. Fog is getting his first, he is just turned one. And Kirby is getting his first, he is 1.5ish. When Huck had his exploratory a month ago he had no signs of adrenal and she couldn't even see his adrenal glands they were so normal looking. She had to really look for them.

Don't let her do both on the same day. Get the Des first....and then forget about the rabies No...all kidding aside....don't get them both at the same time. Do at least a 2 week spell in between. Don't let her convince you that it has nothing to do with the immune system because every decision we make regarding something foreign that goes into the body has something to do with the immune system ciao

@ Sherry - I know, it's so frustrating. Studies from the 70's have shown that vaccinating every year is not necessary. Vets really have no excuse other than greed to want to force it annually. I do somewhat understand that without this *requirement* of yearly vaccinations the vet wont see most pets annually and only see them when it's an emergency but @ Sherik - I pray I get 7/8 symptom free years! That's fantastic. @ Heather - *whispers* I was planning on convincing her it's not safe to do both on the same day and then just not doing the rabies. She and I have talked about inoculations and she knows I don't want anymore for any of my three. There was a vet tech playing middle man between us today so I think I will be able to nix the rabies.

Good luck....I hope you're successful. They don't need vaccines year after year. They've already proven that rabies vaccines carry much longer than they ever imagined. They proved the rabies was good for 3 yrs (there is no such thing as a 1 yr vaccine, same vaccine different packaging, it's the same vaccine). I believe that Dr Dodds has now proven that the vaccine covers 6 or 7 yrs that's the lifetime of most ferrets. ciao

jacksmomma, I live in Lakeland, Florida! I asked my vet about the Des implant. She said she could possibly order it, but there is a chance of it being stopped at customes and turned away. Has your vet ordered the implant for you yet? I am really wanting it!

Another question, what are the pros and cons of vaccinating? I am mostly afraid of the distemper vaccine because of all the negative side affects I have been hearing about.
